Arena Copacabana Hotel is a very old, poorly maintained hotel with strong unpleasant smells throughout the room and small flies and insects around the breakfast food. In our opinion, the hotel does not correspond to the standard or price of a four-star property. We checked into **Arena Copacabana Hotel in Rio de Janeiro on June 10**, late in the evening, at approximately 10–11 p.m. We were two women arriving after a long journey, expecting a clean, comfortable and safe four-star hotel. What we found was completely unacceptable. The room at Arena Copacabana Hotel* had an extremely strong smell of urine, cigarette smoke, dampness and other unpleasant odours. It was impossible to relax or sleep comfortably in such conditions. There was mould, the bathroom and toilet were very old and poorly maintained, and the entire room felt dirty, neglected and unhygienic. The towels were grey, heavily worn and looked so unpleasant that we did not want to touch or use them. We asked the hotel staff to bring us clean replacement towels, but our request was ignored. No clean towels were delivered. At approximately 11 p.m., someone began forcefully pulling and pushing our door and repeatedly trying to open it. The door felt weak and flimsy, and the noise was extremely loud. As two women who had just arrived in Rio de Janeiro late at night, we were genuinely frightened and felt completely unsafe. No guest should have to experience this in a hotel. The breakfast at **Arena Copacabana Hotel** was also unacceptable. Small flies and insects were crawling and flying around the food. Much of the breakfast looked unhygienic and unsafe to eat. We did not feel comfortable eating food that was exposed to so many insects. We immediately contacted the agency through which we had booked the hotel and requested to leave, move to another hotel and receive a refund. However, the hotel refused to return our money. Because it was already very late at night and we had nowhere else to go, we were forced to stay for the first night. The next morning, we packed our belongings and left **Arena Copacabana Hotel**. We moved to the nearby **Windsor California Copacabana Hotel**, which was in approximately the same price category. The difference between the two hotels was enormous. At **Windsor California Copacabana Hotel**, the room was clean, fresh and comfortable. There was no unpleasant smell, the towels were clean and suitable for use, the hotel was well maintained, and the breakfast area was clean and hygienic. The breakfast was properly presented, and there were no flies or insects covering the food. **Arena Copacabana Hotel and Windsor California Copacabana Hotel cost approximately the same, but the quality, cleanliness, comfort and service are completely incomparable.** **Windsor California Copacabana Hotel** provided the standard expected from a good four-star hotel. **Arena Copacabana Hotel** was old, foul-smelling, unhygienic and poorly maintained. It did not provide even the basic level of cleanliness, comfort, service or security that paying guests have the right to expect. Because of the unacceptable conditions at **Arena Copacabana Hotel**, we had to pay for accommodation twice: once for the original booking at Arena Copacabana Hotel and again for our stay at Windsor California Copacabana Hotel. We stayed at Arena Copacabana Hotel for only the first night because we had no safe alternative late at night. We left the next morning and did not use the remaining two nights of our reservation. **We therefore insist on receiving a full refund for the final two unused nights.** This is not simply a matter of personal preference. We left because of the strong smell of urine and cigarettes, mould, dirty and worn towels, insects around the breakfast food, ignored requests for assistance and a serious incident that made us feel unsafe in our room. Charging guests for two nights they could not use because of such unacceptable conditions is unfair and unreasonable. **We expect Arena Copacabana Hotel to take responsibility and refund the cost of the two unused nights without further delay.**

The location is unbeatable and the hotel staff are wonderful. We felt incredibly safe and having the convenience of breakfast in the morning was quite handy. The food was basic and fresh. The rooftop is amazing.

Extremely disappointing stay — bad smell, dirty towels, noise, safety concerns, and no support from management We checked into this hotel two days ago, and unfortunately our experience has been extremely disappointing from the very beginning. The room has a very strong and unpleasant smell, with different odors that make it almost impossible to stay inside comfortably. It does not feel clean or fresh at all. In addition, the room is very noisy, and in the evening someone was trying to open or force their way into our door, which made us feel very uncomfortable and unsafe. Another serious issue is the towels. They are impossible to use — they smell bad and do not feel clean. This is completely unacceptable for any hotel stay. We contacted the hotel and asked for a refund so that we could move to another place, but unfortunately our request has either been ignored or we have received no proper response. The reception team says they cannot do anything, and the management / head department has not offered any real solution or support. For the price and level expected from this hotel, this situation is unacceptable. Guests should not have to stay in a room with bad smells, dirty towels, noise, and safety concerns — especially when the hotel refuses to handle the complaint properly. We are asking the hotel to take responsibility for this situation and provide a fair solution. At minimum, we request a refund for the two last nights, as we are being forced to stay here tonight despite the unacceptable conditions. We would prefer to resolve this matter peacefully and directly with the hotel. If the hotel handles this complaint properly and provides a fair refund, we will be ready to update or remove this review accordingly. At this point, however, we feel ignored, disappointed, and left without any real support. Unless this issue is resolved fairly, I cannot recommend this hotel.
