We stayed at the Atlantica Belvedere Beach Resort for a week in early October, and overall, it was exactly what the brochure promised: peaceful, beautiful, and incredibly relaxing.
The hotel itself is immaculate – clearly very well looked after – and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful if they tried. From the restaurant team to the reception staff, everyone seemed genuinely happy to help. The food deserves a proper mention too: varied, beautifully presented, and consistently delicious, with an excellent range of dishes that changed daily. If you enjoy your meals as much as your sleep, you’ll be in your element here.
Now, for the honest bits. We upgraded to a swim-up room, which looked amazing on paper (and in photos), but in reality… well, let’s just say it was more “polar plunge” than “relaxing dip”. The water was so cold in October that even the thought of getting in required mental preparation and possibly a wetsuit. I suspect in mid-summer it’s bliss, but at the tail end of the season, it was an expensive paddling pool for decoration. Lesson learned: next time I’ll stick with a normal room and put the savings towards a cocktail or two. The indoor pool was slightly warmer, but only slightly.
Evenings were a bit tricky too. Because it was cooler, everyone naturally gravitated indoors — and while that’s no one’s fault, the indoor seating area couldn’t quite handle the influx, so securing a chair sometimes felt like a competitive sport.
Outside the hotel, the local bus service to Kardamena was… let’s say “adventurous”. When it worked, it was fine, but getting on felt like winning a raffle you didn’t know you’d entered. One driver in particular seemed to loathe both people and the concept of smooth braking. After a particularly “spirited” journey, we decided to walk the 4km back instead — about 45 minutes of gentle strolling and far less stressful than hanging on for dear life.
As for Kardamena town itself, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. You can see the potential — there’s a lovely seafront and some genuinely charming spots — but it’s looking a little tired and unloved these days. The pavements are uneven, some buildings need TLC, and it feels like it could be stunning again if the local council gave it a bit of investment.
We travelled with our 19-year-old son, who diplomatically described the resort as “an old people’s home with sunshine.” He wasn’t completely wrong — it’s definitely geared more towards couples and relaxation than action and nightlife — but he did find things to do nearby like watersports, paragliding, and (to his mother’s horror) getting his first tattoo in Kardamena.
All in all, despite the mixed weather and the odd hiccup, we had a genuinely lovely, restful week. The resort is perfect if you’re after peace, good food, friendly staff, and a chance to switch off completely. Just maybe skip the swim-up room in October unless you’re training for the Ice Bucket Challenge.
