"This grand hotel is not so grand"

6.0

The Minshan Lhasa Grand Hotel tries to be grand but falls short. On one side of the dining room, which doubles as the breakfast room, there is a massive 3D model of the Potala. However, the table cloths, chair covers, and carpets are all a bit shabby. At our first breakfast, we were not happy. The serving trays were a mess and and there were only very small amounts of food. Perhaps it was the late hour (9 am), or perhaps the dining room had just been invaded by a huge, and messy, tour group. Subsequent breakfasts were much better. Typical selection of Chinese and Western items, with some Tibetan dumplings thrown into the mix. Our first room was really not satisfactory at all. It was small, there was no storage space, the AC didn't work, the safe was not bolted down, the toilet leaked and flooded the bathroom floor, and it was impossible to figure out how to operate the shower unit. The hotel was booked by our tour group, so we just endured it for the 2 nights prior to traveling to Tibet. Upon our return, we stayed 3 additional nights, but this time we requested an upgraded room. We were put into 519 at the front of the hotel and this room was much better than our first room: a lot more space, a sitting area with a sofa, a separate office niche, and a real walk-in shower. Definitely worth the price for the upgrade. However, the AC still didn't work properly and the safe was still not bolted down. On the plus side, the hotel is well-located for the Tibetan shopping street, the Wuhou Temple and Jinli Street where they have a great selection of street food. So, three stars for the upgraded room, but only 2 stars for the standard room.

"Tibetan style hotel in a good location"

8.0

The staff were very welcoming and the service at breakfast (self-service ) was ok once you worked out the scattered English dishes, having said that the food good. AS others have said there is a very good supermarket just down the road so obtaining supplies including cheap spirits is easy. On the second night we ate with some friends in a recommended restaurant some 10 minutes walk away. Well the China experience came through and with a few pictures and a little help we got food, very hot chilli containing food, good none the less. The hotel room was comfortable and changing money at the desk easy. Good for a stay to visit the city and the pandas

"Very Nice"

8.0

Good location, close to restaurants, supermarket (which has everything), the rooms were very clean, quite spacious and comfortable. When we first arrived (& very tired), there appeared to be no wardrobe, but discovered if you want privacy in the bathroom, pull the wooden screen across and "voila", there was the wardrobe and a safe. Service was fine and we would stay here again.

"good choice"

Stayed one night at this friendly hotel on a busy street on the south side of the city centre. Near the ring roads. Good servive, excellent room and breakfast, no complaints. Restaurants aplenty in the neighbourhood.

"设施比较旧的四星酒店"

8.0

地理位置还算理想,房间比较小,设施也算老旧了。酒店职员过分勤奋,我明明已经挂了“请勿打扰”的牌子在门口,回来发现还是进来打扫了,有点无语。

"Southwest, Chengdu, Sichuan"

8.0

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights to check out this city. Overall, the hotel is a good value. The room was clean and of a decent size. It is close to 'local' types of street markets and a few sightseeing spots. The breakfast is a good start to the day with a variety of veggies and other Chinese styled foods (I figure that I'm visiting China and want to have the local cuisine. I can always have home cooking when I go home). There is also a cafe, where I sat and had coffee and pastries one afternoon, just to take a break from sightseeing. I speak some putonghua so I did not have too much difficulties. The staff were helpful but there was no real travel assistance at the hotel. There was, however, a travel agent shop next to the hotel. Again, the beds in this country are beyond firm. What I have been doing is sleeping on pillows, making it a 'real pillow top' mattress. Aside from the hotel, I've noticed that there is a large population of Tibetans and others from small villages close and far. I'm not sure if that is a reason, but there seems to be lots of scammers here. Beware non licensed taxi drivers and over paying at convenience stores. You can bargain (it's actually expected) in the street markets. To get the most out of Chengdu, I would suggest going with a tour group.
