Matuka Lodge

Not recommended for couple as lacks privacy nor families as too small! Only one long dining table for 10 and wonder how it qualifies as a lodge! Only 5 rooms and breakfast from 8 am to 9 am!!! No fridge nor even kettle plus! Checkout is at 10 am and a loud knock on the door to confirm; hardly hospitable act let alone service. Over priced at NZ$500 per nite! Expedia needs to update.

Mel prepared us a wonderful breakfast, probably the best in our five weeks of travel. There were choices to suit what we felt like and the scrambled eggs were perfect. I loved the cereal choices and the great coffees. We also appreciated the fruit cake and cookies and other treats that were generously provided. The room was very comfortable with quality bedding and furniture and a beautiful bathroom and great views of the mountains. Mel’s care and warmth were very much appreciated, and her restaurant recommendations were great!

The options for watching TV channels were very limited. Most things we wanted to watch required a different subscription so we had to settle for really bad TV shows. This didn’t affect the enjoyment of our stay but it is really the only thing that could be improved and that we would have welcomed.

Quite honestly one of the most well appointed rooms I have ever stayed in. The made to order breakfast was a great addition!

Nothing.

Mel was a fantastic hostess, she greeted us with warmth and energy that brings happiness. She cooked cookies that were yummy. She was very easy to deal with and well presented with how things ran. we had a wonderful night and would easily stay again. We will tell our friends and family.

Nothing, faultless.

This is a very cozy and well maintained house. The view from the living area and also our room is astonishing! Few rooms which made us feeling like this is our home. Mel is super nice and the breakfast was well made beyond our expectations. The location was also not bad, about 10mins drive to the nearest town, Twizel, for gas.

Everything was perfect! The soundproof could be better, but guests in the house slept early, so didn’t have much trouble with that.

Everything. Mel welcomed us and looked after us throughout our stay. She is an absolute star. Rooms are spacious and comfortable and the view is awesome. Nice modern bathroom with spa bath. There are comfortable communal areas and tea/coffee is available all day long with freshly baked goods. There is also something stronger if required. Plenty of choices for breakfast cooked by Mel. Can’t recommend highly enough. Worth every penny.

That we had to leave

Our room was luxurious and well designed. Great bedding. Beautiful bathroom. Libby, the lodge manager, was friendly and full of good advice. She even reached out ahead of time to make sure we had dinner reservations in town. We would definitely stay here again if we were in the area.

Everything was great, but Matuka is more of a luxury B&B than a "lodge". Worth knowing that ahead of time so expectations are appropriate.
