The Crown Hotel

The hotel didn't really function as a hotel more like a pub with bedrooms. Breakfasts were not included and was jolly expensive. Even an extra piece of toast was charged. We got the impression that they didn't really want to do food. The hotel closed at 4.00pm on Sunday so we had to let ourselves in. Very strange.

Good location, poor condition. WC wouldn't flush very well, so was inadequate.

Staff were nice and the place is interesting, but we were on the top floor and the hot water didn't work. We paid £139 an breakfast was not included which does not seem like value for money

Very friendly & helpful staff. Good breakfast. Only downside was shared bathroom on room we had & could hear guests in rooms next to us but for the money we paid can't really complain - good value & lovely location

I wanted a quiet place to stay close to family and that is what I got. I also needed a place that would accommodate my dog; they were happy to do that for an extra £10.

If you want squeaky clean, I’m sure there’s a Premier Inn up the road. If you want character and characters (Paul the manager’s a diamond), stay here. Staff all friendly welcoming. Mind your head tall people - 16th Century beams!

We were surprised to find we had to share a bathroom, something we haven't done in a hotel since 1983. The website says it is arranged over 3 floors so that wasn't a surprise. However, we did expect some sort of lift. We had to climb 35 stairs to our room on the top floor. We are a couple in our 70s with an elderly dog. The climb nearly killed us! The room was cramped with very little space to put anything. The single glazed windows were filthy at the top.There was a socket behind the dressing table where the tiny kettle was plugged in. Every time we picked up the kettle the base slid down onto the floor. The room was serviced twice in the 3 mornings we stayed. No one made our beds or replaced the tea & coffee on one day but that could have been because of the incident with the local police presence on the landing.Breakfast is not included in the price. We have stayed at cheaper places that did provide breakfast. The meals at The Crown are good but rather expensive. The one good point is that it is dog friendly, (apart from the stairs).

Perfectly located hotel in the middle of a lovely town. The bedroom was lovely and spacious but the en-suite was really small. Might have been a nice idea for the heating to have been switched on before arrival, our room felt like an ice box! Fortunately the heater was effective and the room soon warmed up.

Value for money hotel, room was ok, bar and food reasonable. A selection of other pubs and restaurants within a few minutes walk.
