Disappointing stay at Meliá Tortuga (Sal Island) – September 19 to 26 I stayed at Meliá Tortuga with my girlfriend and, unfortunately, it was one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve ever had — made even worse by the fact that this is supposed to be a 5-star resort from a well-known and reputable group. The room: Right from the start, the room was well below even the most basic expectations. Old, worn-out furniture with no visible maintenance. Cleaning was just about acceptable, but the towels delivered daily were stained — sometimes with suspicious marks and, on one occasion, one even came with dried blood stains. Absolutely unacceptable. The food: The buffet was simply miserable. Repetitive, reheated food with an unappetising appearance. I support reducing food waste, but blatantly recycling food meal after meal is a bad practice — especially in a hotel of this supposed level. The "themed" restaurants offered no improvement: low-quality dishes, poor presentation, and a complete lack of care. Honestly, in some cases, it was worse than a school cafeteria. The staff: Most of the staff looked annoyed to be there, treating guests like they were doing us a favour. I understand that tourism can be demanding, but there's a basic level of professionalism and courtesy that should always be present — and only a very small minority of the staff showed that. Bars and drinks: The alcohol served was of extremely low quality. If you're looking to enjoy a good cocktail, forget it. The service felt like a spring-break party trip — fine if your goal is to get drunk and wake up with a headache, not for anyone expecting a quality experience. Pools and hygiene: The pools were in poor condition. From the first day, we noticed missing tiles on the pool floor. But the worst was seeing an employee inside the pool — in uniform — gluing tiles with silicone while the pool was full of guests. On the last day, after spending time in the pool, I found my swim shorts stained with silicone. I went to reception — the PR manager tried to compensate with a massage and open bar, but the bare minimum would have been to clean the shorts. She said they would try. At checkout the next day, I had to ask about the shorts — they handed them to me in a bag, still ruined, and without so much as an apology. Conclusion: Our stay was disappointing from start to finish. Meliá Tortuga falls far short of what is expected from a 5-star resort — especially one under the Meliá brand. I do not recommend it, I will not return, and I sincerely hope a serious audit is conducted on the quality and management of this property. It was a complete waste of money and a total frustration.

The room was larger than expected as we ended up with a two bedroom apartment which was spacious and clean. Apartment was cleaned and mopped every day and clean towels although the bed wasn’t made freshly each day . The staff at the hotel we’re all very friendly and accommodating. It was easy to get around there was a daily bus at 10 o’clock and 11 o’clock into Santa Maria which came back at 1600 or you could get a taxi which was only €5. Taxis are identifiable being blue and yellow but only take cash. There was four main swimming pools two for children and two for adults. Unfortunately the pools have seen better days there was more tiles missing than there was still in the bottom of the pool although pool staff still cleaned it every day. There was one main buffet restaurant and a snack bar restaurant at the pool then there was four other restaurants which were pre-bookable available . the choice in the main restaurant was huge ranging from roast beef to seafood. The only downside was the food wasn’t really hot and we was advised to warm it up in the microwave. Unfortunately I’m now suffering with a bad stomach but can’t confirm that it was food related. Due to the stomach problem starting whilst away we missed the other restaurants that we had booked, we did try the secret garden and we did have a good meal there. All drinks were as expected with large measures. It was an option to upgrade to premium drinks via buying a gold wristband which was €25 a day but a minimum of three days you could also qualify for premium fresh squeezed orange at breakfast and also use the facilities in the other sister hotels The animation team tried very shut but unfortunately was a little bit disappointing especially in the evening. the poolside activities were as the evening. Aqua aerobics and water polo. Cape Verde is definitely a place for not doing anything as there isn’t much to do. There is a day trip to the Salt Lakes and shark bay but it’s quite difficult in the heat of 30+ and humidity of 86%. A huge word of advice take mosquito repellent as by the second day you will become one of the victims around the pool who has a leg full of red lumps.

I was nervous about staying here due to previous poor reviews, but I am delighted to say that whilst the hotel was not perfect, it was far better than I anticipated. Location - On the beach about 5 mins from drive from Santa Maria and about a 20 min transfer time from the airport. Appearance - The hotel has approx 370 rooms I can only speak for our room which was a two bed suite, spotlessly clean and a delight to spend time in. The rooms are in double floor blocks and as there are no lifts and all the pathways are cobbled, I would suggest the hotel would not be suitable for guests with walking difficulties. Mosquitos - I came prepared with repellant cream, plug inns, wipes and sprays and only got bitten 6 times on one ankle when I was a bit to scarce with the application of cream. Just being controversial but I don't think mossies were the problem or the government would insist on malaria tablets. I think they have a lot of biting bugs, so come prepared as anti bug products are very expensive in Cape Verde. Pool/Gardens - 4 pools, two for kids one quiet pool and one one larger activity pool. The beds around the quiet pool are dirty and need replacing and whilst the beds at the large pool are better, all the activities take place there and the music is loud, so it will not appeal to everyone. The Beach - Our favourite place, beds/ Cabanas and brollies are everywhere and never in demand unlike the pool based beds The only minor drawback to the beach was the beach vendors. Personally I did not have an issue with them, they are local men just trying to make a living, and when I told them I come to Cape Verde every year and have every conceivable souveniers at home, we were not bothered at all after the first 2 days. Staff Service- Everyone we came into contact with was warm, friendly and helpful.We shouldn't have favourites but we did, and they were on no particular order, Marissa at the beach bar was fantastic and always remembered our drinks, Lovett an Emily at breakfast and lunch were always smiling and stopped for a chat where possible. Camila at reception was always helpful and professional and our maid Leonisa always kept our room spotlessly clean. Food/Drinks - Thd drinks were fine, the beer and wine were faultless and I had no issues with the local spirits whenever I had a G and T or a cocktail. As for the food as other reviewers have pointed out it can be repetitive, but the live cooking stations were excellent. Freshly cooked eggs to order at breakfast were superb and on the odd occasion that the standing food was not piping hot, the buffet does have a microwave oven which I only had to use once. In addition to the main buffet the hotel offer 4 a la Carte restaurants which need to be booked before hand. To be honest I preferred the main buffet so only went to each a la Carte restaurants once. In my order of preference they were. 1 Pasta Nostra - excellent Fillet Mignon. 2 Secret Garden - Good location but prone to bugs due to being outdoors 3 Aqua Nickey - did not like the choice of starters, all raw seafood or shellfish 4 La cabana - Situated on the beach, sadly the beach/bar toilets are situated in the middle of the restaurant and it does issue an unpleasant odour. Rooms - Our room was fantastic, two bedrooms and it's own kitchenette. We had 2 tvs although the larger of the 2 kept freezing and buffering which interrupted viewing. Our room had a fridge which was topped up daily with 2 large bottles of water. It had a kettle, with tea and coffee making facilities and irons/boards are available on request. The in room safe was free and large enough fir cash and passports etc. Bathroom - We had a huge bathroom, with a powerfull shower and plenty of hot water. Towels are changed daily, and toiletries are available in dispensers but if uou are fussy do bring your own. The bathroom dies have a hairdryer. Spa - I did not use the Spa as it felt expensive particularly when compared with Spas in town. Gym - A reasonable sized gym but I dud not use it a lot due to the heat. Entertainment - During the day the team provide the usual type of facilities, namely aqua gym, volley ball, darts etc. Evening entertainment was on par with every AI hotel I have stayed at, some good. Some average but all better than nothing. Trips - The hotel offers a free shuttle ride into Santa Maria at 10 am and 11 am with a return back at 4 pm, although there is a set free with all local cabs st 5 euro each way. Its a great chance to have a look around the town try a few different restaurants and cafes and highly recommended. We also did the (almost mandatory) round island day trip. Shark bay and Salinas were awesome Mr King on the beach will sort out all your requirements at a reasonable cost. We also walked to Ponte Preta beach 15 mins walk away and walked to Viverio Botanical garden another 15 min walk and nice to see the Cactus garden and rescued animals . WIFI - pretty good throughout the hotel, and free. E- Mail response - Excellent, I wrote to request a quiet room and got a positive response within 24 hours of making my request. Taxes - The hotel charges a hotel tax of approx £26 pp for a two week holiday. There is an airport tax to pay on arrival, of about £27 pp I cannot stress this enough, pay this tax before you leave its on the CV govt website, otherwise you will be queuing behind 100 or so people Tring to be served by one individual at the airport. Do it before you go and save yourself 30 - 60 mins of queuing at the airport.

Currently here on our last night beautiful place to stay staff are all great. Food could do with being a little warmer but all in all a fantastic place

Antonio is best one here, very helpful and very friendly. Excellent service highly recommend. Offers great trips in a fantastic hotel and beach. GO TO ANTONIO IF YOU NEED ANYTHING.

Currently here and enjoying every minute of our holiday. I have no faults or complaints. Food is nice and lots of variety. Our room is massive and love it. Amazing. Drinks on tap all the time service with a smile. Love it here. And will be back. 5 stars. Don't listen to the bad reviews just picky

This hotel definitely not suitable if you have mobility issues all pathways are very uneven cobbles, rated as a 5 star no more than a 3 star, entertainment area very small 48 seats sorry 47 one collapsed when I sat on it, it is a massive complex this area is to small, food poor cater mainly for Portuguese, staff are very friendly and helpful

Quartos grandes ,Localização do hotel e praia é excelente , escolha variada de comida nas refeições e boa qualidade ,e simpatia de todos os funcionários , muita água disponível no frigorífico dos quartos , Ar condicionado muito bom para refrescar . Restaurantes temáticos muito bons com varia disponibilidade para marcação

Limpeza nos quartos poderia ser um pouco melhor , não é péssima mas não é óptima . Muito mosquitos nos quartos , poderiam disponibilizar um anti mosquitos para cada quarto e ser opção do cliente aplicar ou não .
