AUThe included breakfast was great, though it would be great if there was a little variety from day to day. Staff were fantastic (including gorgeous golden retriever who sought out pats from everyone). The suites were large which was great for a group who benefited from two separate sleeping areas. Comfy beds. Very convenient location next to the Yamanoeki as well as ski in / ski out access (it took a few days to work this out however, overall Shiga Kogen is confusing on first arrival). The hotel's onsen area is amazing, great after a day of skiing. As a side trip visit the Monkey Park! It's a long walk in but worth it.
The hotel is a bit dated as it is from the Japanese skiing heyday of 20 + years ago, but it is very clean and ensuite bathrooms were great (though we did have a constant hot water problem). Unless you ate in the hotel restaurant there was no evening meal options nearby, also limited in Shiga Kogen overall, so it's best to have a bigger meal at lunchtime and snacks in the evening. Most days we ate at the Yamanoeki restaurant. Nothing wrong with the hotel's dinner, but as smaller eaters we didn't want that much food. Having worked in a similar hotel myself 30 years ago, I understand this is the typical Japanese destination hotel experience, so not criticising, just making non-Japanese visitors aware. Hot tip....bring supermarket supplies with you.

This place is really bad value for money. There were clumps of dust in the bathroom, the fixtures hadn't been updated in decades. The breakfast was awful. Nobody manning the front desk. The Japanese tatami room and the onsen were OK but these were the only redeeming factors in an otherwise totally disappointing stay. I was expecting much, much more for the price we paid. If it was 50% cheaper, it would've been barely worth it.
Excellent location for skiing in the Shiga Kogen ski resort. The Hotel amenities were very good e.g. satellite TV, hot spring baths, etc but the local area is devoid of any kind of nightlife.
