"Quiet place"

10.0

This amazing place, full of history, is lost in the middle of nowhere. If you’re looking for a crowded noisy place don’t go there but if you’re looking for a quiet peaceful place to sleep… it’s definitively the place to go… Breakfast was excellent

"Fascinating place to stay"

8.0

The rooms in the hospedaria are lovely if slightly unusual in their use of glass. The setting is beautiful and a visit to the monastery and church is included in the price. Make sure you have a look at the graveyard. Breakfast was very good. Unfortunately the advertised evening meal was not available and there are no local restaurants.

"Highlight of our holiday"

10.0

Staying here really was the highlight of our holiday in northern Portugal. A small part of the monastery has been converted into a small and very modern hotel with stylish and minimalist décor. Dinner and breakfast is served in a dining room converted from the former refectory. In addition to staying in a nice hotel you get to look around the monastery, its cloisters and rooms, many of which have splendid azulejos, and visit the church with its gold guilt rococo and baroque interior. For us, the real highlight was walking around the 100 acres of grounds which feature a line of seven fountains on a hillside leading to a chapel at the top. After the evening meal, the waitress and kitchen staff came into the restaurant to sing a prayer which was delightful. Whilst it is a religious establishment, there’s not a hint of evangelism and it adds to the fun of staying somewhere unusual.

"A lovely place"

8.0

Have just spent two nights at this restored monastery (6 kms outside Braga). The welcome was very friendly and our comfortable and modern rooms reflected the fairly recent refurbishment which has created the 9 room accommodation on a single floor. The rooms are compact and sparely furnished and perhaps reflect the ethos of this place. A modern en suite with waterfall shower - divided from the bedroom by a glass wall - a curtain pulls across on the bedroom side for privacy. The rooms overlook one of the monastery's lovely walled courtyard gardens - the windows are recessed with shutters and sliding glass. The comfort level could easily be improved by the simple addition of hooks for robes / towels etc. There are no hair driers in situ - tiny travel models are provided on request at reception. We booked dinner for our arrival evening and were the only three diners. The restaurant is staffed by some of the missionary workers who were utterly charming, but the food was very average. However, we were reallly touched as our waitress, cook and kitchen staff sang an Ave Maria at the end of the evening. The Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães is an exceptionally worthwhile visit whether for a stay or just to see the monastery and it's vast grounds. We decided that for us it was perhaps the most striking place of interest in this area.

"Unbelievable place"

10.0

Suddenly, this hotel became one of the highlights of our trip! It is simple amazing. We were traveling with friends and the four of us were in awe seeing every room and every detail. The rooms are a perfect combination of modern design and the actual monastery. The following morning, after a nice breakfast, we explore the entire monastery. It is incredible. Unforgettable. I hope we can come back again, soon. Don't miss to have dinner there and wait to hear the nuns singing an Ave Maria before going to their rooms. Heaven!
