Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan

The traditional Japanese breakfast was excellent, and so was the kaiser dinner. Everything was perfect and we were all impressed and intrigued by the traditional style and decoration of the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. a big thumb up!

It’s a scam, pictures really differ from reality. They try to charge extra for things you didn’t order. It smelled terrible. DO NOT STAY AT ANY PRICE. I was charged more than a Four Seasons in Tokyo. The room smelled rotten eggs and at night it smelled the hotel kitchen in your room. I believe Ryokans is a tourist trap to avoid at all costs, specially this one. English is barely spoken so communication is really hard. The different parties that we were checking out at the same time were really glad that our stay there was coming to an end.

Great location and service!

It was traditional with modern touches really well combined. Our room was massive. Everything so clean. Staff were fantastic and helpful. Restaurant offered real traditional Japanese cuisine and catered for Westerners also. Location right next to the old town was fantastic.

Everything was great.

From the moment we entered this property we knew that it was going to be fun and different. It was our first ryokan experience and they greeted us by striking a gong at the entrance. We were then treated to traditional Japanese hospitality - slippers instead of our shoes, matcha tea and a sweet in our room, and kimonos to wear around the hotel (and even out and about). The staff was incredibly nice and helpful, and greeted us warmly every time we passed by. The breakfast was so good, in a private room each morning with Western or Japanese options. The location was great - in the heart of Takayama Old Town, by the Miya River and very close to the red Nakabashi Bridge, which was so lovely with cherry clossoms blooming. We walked to the Jinya Monrng Market each day of our stay which was so fun to see all the local vendors and eat street foods. Our room was very spacious, with a sitting room area and a separate bedroom. Our bathroom was very large as well by Japanese standards, with our own private jacuzzi. Very comfortable and nice!

I can't think of one thing that we didn't like!

This hotel was beyond our expectations, starting from the professionalism and kindness of the staff to the beautiful building and room. The attention to detail and care for the customer made this experience unforgettable. The dinner was delicious as well as the breakfast: we definitely suggest these services. 10/10 recommended!

Great hotel allowing you to immerse into Japanese traditions and hospitality. Rooms with tatami maths, Japanese style breakfast and dinner, onsen on site (or you can walk across the road in your yukata to a sister property to enjoy a roof top onsen there). The level of service is astonishingly high. However the attention to your person is overwhelming. When we arrived someone stopped us on the street and asked for our names. It was a hotel staff. We were rushed in and at least 5 more people ran towards us from different corners shouting and talking all at the same time. We were swiftly brought up to our room in less than a minute I think, the luggage had already been delivered. Within next 3 we were served tea and sweets, asked to sign forms, confirm preferred dinner time, breakfast time and it's type, were given all sorts of explanations, asked what arrangements we need for our departure, and hundreds other things have happened. Totally overwhelming experience... The stay overall was excellent. My only negative comment is the super speedy delivery of food during meal times. During a 9 course dinner almost all dishes were served before we had finished the previous course (or even before we had started it). Then there was a long gap towards the end. Same for the Japanese style breakfast. All hot dishes were cooked in front of us right after our arrival. By the time we finished with salads, raw juice (delicious!) and colds dishes, our grilled fish, grilled koji miso paste and hot porridge were already almost cold. Everything else was superb!
