The rooms were spacious and comfortable.

The food was really disappointing - particularly children’s meals. We tried Japanese as well as western style breakfast. The dinner was Japanese style. The meals were not freshly made (both adults’ and children’s’ meals) - we’ve had to pass on many dishes as they weren’t tasty, were stale or overcooked (eg fish may have been reheated rather than freshly cooked or it may have been overcooked to give it dry taste). Children’s meals were particularly disappointing- cheap and unhealthy, with most items deep fried. A particularly disappointing example was to find out that what looked like deep fried “calamari rings” actually wasn’t calamari at all (not sure what it was but it fell apart as you bit into it). In addition, the hotel charges for every additional item (try asking for something different on a side - it’s an extra charge). Given the daily rate wasn’t cheap, it’s quite poor service. We previously stayed at a hotel which was a similar rate per night and the service and food were absolutely exceptional. Our first room smelt of smoke, which was off putting particularly because we were travelling with small children. The rooms are large and comfortable though.

Loved the very mindful service of the staff. They were truly amazing and thoughtful.

It did not feel like a cosy Japanese ryokan. I think it is over priced for what you get.

A group of six friends (3 couples) recently visited Japan for the first time. We stayed in multiple locations throughout Japan but our favorite was our 2 day stay at Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan in Takayama. This is truly a special ryokan and one that allows you to become immersed in the respect and traditions of Japan. The staff was incredibly attentive, kind and welcoming. The food was amazing ... the breakfast was like no other we've had in a hotel. And finally, the accommodations were peaceful, inviting and comfortable. We were sad to have only stayed here for 2 nights -- we would have loved more time in this magical ryokan and town. I HIGHLY recommend staying here if you're in Takayama. You will not be disappointed.

This property is good. The hotel is old but the staff is family owned and they take great care of you. The facilities are acceptable for the town but the service and staff make up for it. I would recommend it just letting people know if not new. It is clean, well located and comfortable.
