"Poor nights sleep, nice public areas."

6.0

Staff were friendly, breakfast was good, location was good, reception and lounge areas were nice.

Room and bathroom were small and dated. There was a lot of street noise and single glazed, not helped by fact the room was hot so wanted window open anyway. Terrible nights sleep both nights. This was not a 60 dollar a night hotel room in Equador

"Not quite 4* but better than a 3 *"

8.0

We stayed at the Ikala twice during our recent visit to Equador and Galápagos Islands. It was part of our package. First impressions were good, nice room and bathroom but during the night it was very noisy. It had no tea/coffee making facilities. The bathroom and shower were nice and the bed comfortable. On our second visit we had a different room which was their disabled room. It was nice but quite stuffy and no windows to the outside so no air. Again it was very noisy as the cleaners area was just outside and the whole place echoed. Arriving back on a Sunday, we were shocked that we couldn’t eat at the hotel because then it restaurant doesn’t open on a Sunday. We were given directions to other restaurants and we walked to a Colombian restaurant but really didn’t feel safe walking about in that area at night. Later read that tourists shouldn’t walk about in that area at night!! We should have been advised to take a taxi to a restaurant. Note - we used Uber mostly to get about Quito. Felt far safer and much cheaper. Really didn’t trust the taxis and very few used meters - all tried to rip you off.

"A little underwhelmed"

6.0

Staff were friendly and helpful and hotel was clean. I think you play the lottery when it comes to rooms. All very different. We were placed in a large old double on ground floor with a very narrow shower room which had glass blocks facing the restaurant area with no coverings. When we complained they did move us, which we couldn’t fault. No air conditioning, and the rooms can get stuffy. Please note, if you are there on a Sunday, the restaurant and bar are closed and there is no coffee/ tea facilities in the rooms or hotel. Breakfast - poor buffet selection Location - quite a distance from the historic district, 20 min taxi ride or 45 mins walk

"Great service, lovely design"

9.0

The hotel is lovely. It is nicely decorated and there are multiple places to sit comfortably while you are waiting for a transfer or tour pick-up. Our room was very small. We had two, comfy twin beds and the room was nice and warm. It was early January and the temperature was pretty cool at the time that we were there. It was good that they offered a little desk in the room. There was enough space for me to get some work done on a laptop. They have a nice restaurant and a nice, small bar area. We had dinner at the restaurant and the food and service were really good, a bit pricey for Ecuador. The breakfast buffet was really good and they had a lot of options. Everyone at reception spoke English well, they were all very helpful and friendly. Our transfer to Baños was an hour late and the doorman waited with us to make sure that everything was okay.

The room was very small and the stairs leading to the room were narrow. It wasn't easy lugging our large bags up the stairs. Fortunately, we only had to go up 1 flight of stairs. There is an elevator on the newer side of the hotel.

"Well located boutique hotel with nice public areas"

8.0

The Ikala is tucked away down a small street in the Mariscal district of Quito. We stayed a total of 4 times (5 nights) over the course of a 18 day trip to Ecuador. The staff were very helpful , especially regarding the times we left certain pieces of luggage at the hotel whilst off on our travels..it all went smoothly. The 4 different rooms we had were all clean and spacious. The Breakfast is OK, not the best, and the Restaurant (open Mon-Sat from about 17.30 -20.00) lacks atmosphere, the food though is perfectly acceptable. All in all a good base
