"Palmetto Bugs"

2.0

It's taken me a while to write this review because I didn't want to write it out of anger, but I think it's only fair to share my experience so you know what to (possibly) expect. I had booked a room for myself and a friend for a her birthday weekend. We only live 12 minutes from the cottages so we are very familiar with the area. We were excited to have a night to be sans husbands and kids and enjoy a good dinner and some girl talk and some wine when we got back to the room. The cottages look so sweet from the outside and probably some of the rooms are a bit better, but we weren't super impressed upon arrival. Not very clean and just run down a bit. Nothing a little time and swapping out a few things couldn't help. Our real disappointment was when we found 3 dead roaches/palmetto bugs in our room. We cleaned the first one up ourselves and thought nothing of it. Then we found a second one on the bedroom floor that wasn't all the way dead and just couldn't bare to pick it up. We were feeling discouraged. We called management and said that we just didn't think we could stay and decided to leave. As we were washing our wine glasses we saw the third bug. We took out the trash and washed the glasses and returned the keys. We were in the room less than 60 min and left it as we found it, minus one dead bug. We were told that "this is Florida and there are bugs here and we spray for palmetto bugs, which is why they were dead." We didn't find that acceptable. We live here too and don't have bugs in our home and my husband and I have stayed at a near by resort (5 min away) and didn't see one bug in sight. We had hoped for a refund, but were denied. We were offered a 15% discount on our next stay and they were much apologetic. You should know I did try and dispute charges as well and it did not happen since we were welcome to stay in that room. We were so hoping for a great time here and ended up being very disappointed and out $211. I will say when we asked for a later check out, he said that was fine at no extra fee which we thought was gracious. Unfortunately, we were unable to take him up on it.

"Just needs a bit of TLC"

6.0

We booked two cottages and the Heron House for a family vacation. The location of the cottages is lovely. At the south end of the key, it is less crowded, a couple of miles from Turtle Beach and surrounded by amazing homes. Check in was very easy. We followed the instructions in our email. There is plenty of parking and right in front of each cottage! We all went into our cottages/house and we're pleased with the size of each space. There is plenty of room to move around. Our cottage needed updating in the kitchen and bathroom, however, the cottage my sister stayed in, Cottage #1 had an updated kitchen. The AC unit in our cottage worked well but needed a little work in order to get it going. The AC in my sisters cottage did not work well at all. The floors in all three locations (my sisters cottage, my cottage, and Heron House) were filthy! My nephew who is crawling, looked like he crawled through the dirt. I took a washcloth and got down on the floor and cleaned the floor of my cottage (a ton of dog hair was on the washcloth). Our bathroom had this huge empty space behind the door that could be used a lot better than it is. Some drawer fronts are very worn or crooked. The last few nights, my sister found 2 cockroaches in her cottage (I think they were the Palmetto bugs which fly in with you) and they had a major problem with a raw sewage smell coming out of their bathroom. The pool is small but refreshing and the dock is nice although needs new furniture which isn't torn. All-in-all we had a nice stay, it served its purpose.

"gem tucked away on quieter side"

6.0

nice day for family of 4 loved riding our bikes to the beach. Richard the caretaker was very friendly and a hard worker. the property is older and he is working on updating it and I think it will be even better once it's complete. they provide three bikes for cruising into town paddle boards and kayaks for the Lagoon and a nice small pool to Relax In. towel service would have been so appreciated or at least a washer and dryer in each unit I don't really want to do laundry on my vacation and when it's a Beach vacation you need a lot of towels. the sofa sleeper and bed in the bedroom were very comfortable. The bathroom needed some updating but was comfortable to shower in. we cooked every night in our kitchen and everything worked well. the TV could have more stations but the internet works well.

"Romantic Getaway"

10.0

We had our wedding reception at this property 8 years ago and decided to visit for our anniversary weekend. The new owners have done a lot of work around the property and it looks beautiful!! We stayed in the sunset cottage which is a romantic studio with complete kitchen, king size bed, and private patio with beach (sand with loungers) We used the paddle boards and kayaks in the lagoon behind our cottage and rode the complimentary bikes to the secluded beach at the end of point of rocks road. We had such a wonderful time and cannot wait to come back!

"Loved It"

10.0

I can't say enough about this place. We went the week of Nov 13th so it was off season. We stayed in the cottage called Key Lime. It's a 2 bedroom cottage. One bedroom had a king bed w/master bath across the hall. The shower was a walk in, water pressure was great. The 2nd bedroom had 2 twin beds and the 2nd full bathroom was off the kitchen. This one had a tub/shower. Both bedrooms had very comfortable mattresses and plenty of pillow's. It's basically a turn-key, you don't have to worry about bedding, dishes, utensils etc. The kitchen had a small table and they had another larger table in the dining area for larger families. We had a very large patio that was screened in. We had our morning coffee out there watching the sun-wakeup. The family room was very large with a good size flat screen tv. This cottage is very roomy and comfortable. The pool is right outside the cottage and its shaped as a flip flop. Pool deck has tables and plenty of lounge chairs. There is also a sun-deck on the other side of the pool with more chairs and tables over looking a canal. Very picturesque. The caretaker of this property is a wealth of information about the area. You are a hop skip and a jump to all kinds of attractions. Including a great shopping area that reminded me of a mini Key West. Lots of little shops to stroll thru. If you don't want to cook one night go to Captain Curt's and Boat Yard Bar & Grill, you won't be disappointed. Both are within a couple of miles of your cottage. This place is great. I not only will return but I will be sharing my stay with all my friends. Best form of advertisement is word of mouth.

"We love it here!"

10.0

We have been 4 times this year alone! First time just my husband and I. Then the rest with the kids and the doggie! We love the location, the relaxed atmosphere, the proximity to the village, and IT IS QUIET!!!!! We love being close enough to the village and the city, but far enough away!!! We will continue to come back, and look at the calendar for school vacations so we can fit in a long weekend! Yvonne is wonderful!!!

"Wonderful Weekend!"

10.0

Wonderful weekend shared with family and friends! The Heron House is big enough to accommodate both! My mother who is 100 years young loves this place and never wants to go home! Everything about the complex is tropical - colors of the cottages and the pool is flip flop shaped! This was a return visit for us and will be definitely be visiting again!

"Nice cottages on Heron Lagoon"

10.0

Love Flip Flop cottages, this was our third trip. Yvonne was very helpful and extremely kind. It's dog friendly, which is a plus. Good location to visit Siesta Key or Venice Beach. They are beach cottages, not the Ritz...keep that in mind. We visited Brohard Dog beach two days in a row and my dog loved it. We will be back, I'm sure.

"Great Place on Siesta! Great people!"

8.0

This was a great place to stay with an unfortunate event taken care of immediately. The price is very reasonable compared to the rest of the hotels on the island as well. The good news: These Cottages are a great place to stay on the key. You have access to a lagoon with paddleboats, kayaks, etc if you choose. A fridge, stove/oven, and silverware and dishes to use if you need them. If you aren't going to be on the beach itself, I can't see any where else to be staying. The not so great news: We found some cleanliness problems in our cottage the first night. However, the owner seemed genuinely disgusted and said she had new cleaning staff and it was unacceptable. They immediately upgraded our room that was in immaculate shape and refunded our first night there and we had zero issues the rest of the week. Also, the pool is really tiny if you are into swimming in pools. Most of our problems came from Siesta Key itself, as not enough good can be said about this villa. Be wary that the parking on Siesta Key Beach\Crescent Beach is absolutely atrocious and gets extremely annoying. There are free rides to the beaches that require tips only, but you still have to move your stuff from you car in and out and hold it on a cart which gets pretty old. Also, traffic is horrendous in the afternoon due to bridge construction right now. In any case, this is a great place on the Key, and can't be beat for its price.
