The Algonquin Hotel

When I checked in the guy at the desk gave me a working key to an already occupied room, much to the shock of the nude man who was surprised at my entrance. When I informed him of what happened he gave me a key to another occupied room, so, third time was lucky and I finally got a room which was free. The room smelled strongly of fresh paint, I think, and had only one plug. There was a sink, but the toilet and shower facilities were common. When I asked about possible noise from the band who was to go on at 10:30 the desk clerk assured me that nothing would be heard. This wasn't true, they were quite loud, from the basement to the second floor. I would have gone to check them out if I didn't have to be up at six AM for the tour I was going to be taking. Like I said in the title, the cost is very reasonable considering that the hotel is downtown, but be forewarned that there are few frills to be had. I am glad that no other guests had a key to my room!

Enjoyed the fact the place was built in 1888. Just needs a little freshening.

This is an older downtown property with many permanent guests. The exterior of the building looks in relatively good condition but the lobby, hallways, rooms, bathrooms, and furnishings are in sad need of upgrade. The attraction is the low room rate. The neighborhood seemed safe enough with a good coffee shop about two blocks away. The place is an acceptable one night say when traveling.

Price is good but room not very comfortable. Felt dust in the air I was breathing. Overall Ok but need to improve cleanliness and air ventilation. Also cable and Wi-Fi were down which did not affect me too much. Basically you get what you pay for.

The night we stayed, the bar was having a music performance. While they tried to accommodate this by housing us on the far side, the music vibrated the room and seemed unnecessarily loud. Aside from this, the room was nice and the hotel was across from a nice park by the river. It was easy to find and centrally located.
