"Great staff, stunning location, great little break, but the hotel needs an overhaul."

7.0

Beautiful location, stunning building with a lot of original features, set in beautiful grounds. Exceptionally friendly and efficient staff. Nothing is too much trouble. Toni is a one man (female) band, and the young guy was very chatty and pleasant. Very informal. Our bedroom was big and comfortable with lovely views and clean, comfortable bedding and towels. Good cooked breakfast with help yourself tea and coffee. Ideal base for exploring Northumberland.

It's difficult to be negative as there's a certain charm to the hotel and the limited staff are clearly doing their best. However, if you are expecting 3 star hotel experience, this is not for you. To be honest, the price reflects this. Having said that, there is a very comfortable pub just down the road with accommodation that is beautiful for not much extra. The hotel badly needs a deep clean, although the bedroom and the bar itself were clean and the drinks were really good, the bar room is gloomy and smells of smoke. The evening meals are served here and it was not a great experience. It is a barmeal and best, not hotel standard. It could be stunning with a clean up and a bit of decorating. There is a big fireplace that could be a feature, but it is neglected. I'm sure the staff are doing their best, but someone, the landlord or the actual owner, needs to look at it through new eyes. I can see from the reviews that there is live music at the weekend which I'm sure is good fun, particularly if travelling with a few people, but the bar isn't great for a pleasant drink. I would imagine that a full refurbishment is out of the question due to costs, but some simple changes, to the bar room in particular, could make a difference. It's a shame because the hotel has some stunning features and it would be a shame if they lost guests to better quality accommodation in the area.

"A great place away from it all"

9.0

Excellent location off the beaten track. An amazing building with some large lovely bedrooms. The restaurant has a good menu and the quality and quantity is very good. The staff cannot be faulted they are very good, polite and very helpful. A great place for a break. Ideal for families with large well kept gardens for children to play.

The driveway does need a little work on the pot holes!!!

"We really enjoyed the walks and cycle rides from Clennell Hall."

7.0

The location is superb. The hotel is a great building, but is a little tired and needs quite a lot of investment, as the proprietor freely accepted. The room was spacious, with an attractive view. The staff were friendly people and helpful. Clennell is an excellent base from which to walk or cycle (we did both). Coquetdale is really beautiful and unspoiled, and Clennell Hall is perfectly placed to enable you to explore it.

Breakfast was at best average and could have done with fruit , decent bread and fruit, particularly for those who-like us- do not really like cooked breakfasts. As mentioned above, Clennell Hall is rather faded and tired, but of course one accepts that not many people have the considerable resources needed to restore it to full glory. I really hope that the current proprietors and staff can make a go of things, as they all seem decent people.
