"very pleasant"

9.0

The evening meal was superb pleasant bar. The staff were very obliging.

Cosy room was a bit small for 2 walkers bags and rucksacks. That said I did book that room so not the hotels fault.

"Good"

5.0

Lovely looking pub in good location. The staff we met were trying their best in a difficult situation as it felt as if the whole place was understaffed and one young person was trying to handle everything at once.

Service at dinner was slow and seemed to be indifferent (see comment above). We watched the episode of Hotel Inspectors that local people had told us about that featured this pub. I think they all missed a huge trick in not thinking about their walking and cycling clientele. It was expensive for what it was.

"Good pit stop if walking"

6.0

Perfect location and delicious breakfast. Super friendly staff, pub was really good to sit and have dinner and drinks.

Room was comfortable enough but brickwork on fireplace is loose and I wouldn’t want to be in there with kids as could easily come down. PAT testing on electrical items seems to have last been done in 23 which is probably why they didn’t all work.

"Disappointing needs an upgrade staff very cheerful and efficient."

4.0

The staff were cheerful and accommodating but the hotel itself was disappointing. The room number 6 was above the bar so there was noise until closing time. The floorboards were all uneven and creaked all the time especially the room above me. The noise was constant all through the early hours until about 8am where I believe a dog was staying with its owner. The power of the water in the bathroom was very weak. No wardrobe for clothes only a couple of hooks with hangers. Kettle never switched off. No drinking water provided. No bathroom brush to clean toilet. The stairs were very steep not suitable for the infirm or elderly like us. There was at least a 2 inch gap under door which didn’t board well for fire regulations. A draught excluder was provided to cover the gap.

The room plus what was stated above.

"Good location with nice pub for South Downs Way hikers."

7.0

The pub has a lovely seating area by the fireplace. Loved enjoying a drink there and chatting to other customers. I liked the tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits in the room. It is a good location for South Downs Way hikers.

The layout of the room was a little strange and I would recommend pulling up the carpet.

"Great location and great bar/restaurant staff - a few minor niggles for the price!"

8.0

Great location for a walk in to Steyning and for the South Downs. Staff were excellent. Good choice of breakfast items to order as well as the usual cereals and breads. The evening dinner menu was good too!

We stayed in one of the outside cottage type rooms. The floor had not been swept when we arrived (so many bits on our feet!!) and wasn’t swept when the housekeeping staff came in on our second day. We ran out of handwash as that hadn’t been checked either.
