"It was worth it just for Uluru–Kata Tjuta!"

6.0

This hotel is located within Ayers Rock Redor t. We stayed here for two nights with the aim of exploring Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park—a must-do, but physically very demanding. First of all, we should say that, unfortunately, we booked this hotel through a non-transparent website—Guest Reservations—which impersonated the hotel and charged us the full amount, without our authorization, 10 months in advance, with no option to cancel. Be very careful! We strongly advise never using this site for any booking. Sails in the Desert claims to be a 5-star hotel, but in reality it is a simple property with very basic infrastructure… The check-in process was not very informative. Our room was not ready, and we were told we would receive an email notification when it was—it never came. The room assigned was #357, on the third floor. It was spacious and had a balcony. The furniture was basic and cleanliness left much to be desired: the sofa had several stains, and the inner cover of one of the larger cushions was also stained. The bed had good-quality sheets, but it was always poorly made, with badly fitted linens. The pillows were of poor quality and did not allow for a good night’s sleep. The bathroom was reasonable, with good towels and the necessary toiletries. There was complimentary coffee and tea in the room, but, incredibly, no complimentary water was provided. In a place where temperatures reach such high levels, the very least one would expect is water in the room. When we asked about it, we were told to buy it at the nearest supermarket. There was a swimming pool in the garden area. Food prices at the restaurant were high, and the quality was only average. For example, we paid AUD 51 per person for the breakfast buffet, which had limited options. Anecdotally, when we asked for boiled eggs, we were told to help ourselves to some partially broken pieces sitting in a small bowl. Moreover, when we ordered an espresso and a flat white, they were charged separately… Ridiculous! We also warn readers of this review to be prepared for swarms of flies that persistently invade during any visit. Consider buying a head net! It’s not a joke—it’s real. Despite the questionable quality of this hotel, the opportunity to experience this park—so full of scenic locations and rich in Aboriginal beliefs—made the trip worthwhile.

It was impossible to eat dinner at the hotel unless you took the buffet for 102 dollars, there was no a la carte. And the bar stopped serving food at 5pm no doubt to force people to take the buffet. We ate at another hotel.

"Sails In The Desert"

8.0

We recently had a three night stay at the Sails. The resort itself is nice but I wouldn’t say luxurious. The reception desk is the furthest distance away from the front door that I have ever experienced anywhere in the world. You have to walk past the gift shop/gallery, café and then you arrive at reception. Also the waiting area near the front door has very limited seating so if you are waiting for a tour pickup and don’t want to deal with the flies or heat its standing room. Our room was a great size and clean but a bit dated. The bed was very comfortable but not so the pillows. Our sofa had some stains on the fabric which wasn’t a good look. The bathroom was very nice and had obviously had a more recent update. Did appreciate having two suitcase racks. We were unable to use our balcony chairs as they had not been cleaned and the chair cushions still wet from the previous weeks rain. We didn’t have breakfast on site as it only offered a buffet breakfast for $51 a head. We did have the buffet dinner in the Ilkari Restaurant which was nice but would I say worth the $102 per head, I am not sure. I do understand that everything needs to be brought into the resort but that is still a little steep. The pool looked inviting but unfortunately did not have any sails over it to help protect swimmers from the hot sun. The sails were on one side so that you could eat under cover. The free shuttle bus service around the Ayers Rock Resort is a great way to get around to other parts of the resort but it really needs to start earlier. Also beware that you can only use credit (+ fee) or debit (no fee) cards at the resort.

"Good, close to outstanding"

8.0

One of four hotels on the Yulara Resort and very classy it is too. Design of the place is nice with anchored sails providing shaded areas. Spacious well-fitted out apartments have most things you would need, although not providing complimentary bottled water was a bit tight. Also, the air con basically had two modes; either quiet and ineffective, or noisy and cooling. Breakfast was really good. I didn't think the evening buffet was worth 100 dollar bucks. Cost of everything was high, but you have to take into account the logistics of being in the middle of nowhere. Swimming pool was lovely. 15 min drive to Uluru or the airport, 4 hour schlep to Alice Springs . Flies an issue in outdoor areas, so most people by a head net.
