Seriously. Google Maps street view is from 2018, seven years ago. The parking lot is packed with people who live there, it's filthy with butts, bits of trash, and broken down rusty mildew grey wet/worn/rusty with PNW weather "furniture". The AC window units are in, in February.
Save your money, there are way better budget rentals up the road.
There are two kinds of budget motels: short term rentals for the houseless/formerly evicted and those for the tourist trade. Not to say there canโt be overlap, but this is not an establishment that manages it effectively.
PRO:
-$62/night
-No hesitation for extra towels or blankets
-the aroma of bleach was prominent when we entered the room
-located on the Olympic peninsula
CON:
-we discovered the aroma of bleach was heavy in the sheetsโฆour throats were raw in the morning, which disappeared after leaving the room
-scent of mildew upon entering the room, not dissipated with both windows open, granted, the bathroom window was thick with it, and better left shut
-water damage on the laminate flooring, boards peeling back under the front window
-main window came crashing back down after opening it to get some breathable air in the room
-bed feels like a sheet wrapped over bare springs
-shower drains poorly
-toilet hesitates to flush
-room key does not work in the deadbolt
-consistent light flickering, two lamps wouldnโt stay on and general dimming of everything intermittently (we checked the bulbs, they were firmly in place).
-the outlet in the bathroom is nonfunctional (noted in a prior review months prior...so maintenance is not attended to)
-as someone who pridefully fixes up older homes, the one open outlet not dominated by a power strip appeared outdated and in need of switching out, so we did not use it
-after night two and waking up feeling like we were getting sick again (we were not getting sick, it was the room), we had to leave to preserve our health
As the smell of bleach faded, the smell of mildew increased. I strongly suspect mold and mildew given our general respiratory signs and symptoms. As such we packed up, departed, and started attempting a cancellation before 10am after night 2.
My raw throat, congestion and such faded the first night in a CLEAN motel that didn't smell rank with mold. My other half's allergies settled down after leaving as well. New CPAP filters required changing out to remove the smell from his medical device.
The lovely owner refused to give to give us his name for cancellation paperwork. Though he talked a good game, he lied about refund steps for the remaining nights we could not stay there, for health reasons. We were told prior to booking we could cancel with a 16% penalty, and yet, this is happening regarding the remaining days.
Phone circles. Hours of wasted vacation time to get money back on days we wonโt be spending at this (probably) moldy, (definitely) houseless person motel.
Oh, I attempted a shower before leaving. The water pools in the bottom of the shower so your feet get to marinate in the remains of whomever stayed in the room prior coming back up in the drain. And the mildew smell explodes in the bathroom with the steam. As a homeowner, Iโd investigate for water leaks in the bathroom. Maybe Iโll get the souvenir of a foot fungus after this dirty place.
Iโve been partaking of budget ma & pa motels across the country since the 90s. Each is different, unique, but clean and mold free is a gold standard. We left this room for health reasons after trying to stick it out. We really did think it might be the bleach at first. Raw throats during room time that disappear after leaving the room isnโt a good sign.
Iโm mystified by the good reviews. I do think those reviews arenโt coming from tourists.
The consistent light flickering is indicative of potential fire danger, which also contributed to our decision to leave.
Weโre up the road in Port Angeles in a pristine, spotless ma & pa hotel now for $72/night, for the remainder of our vacation. This one has more space, a full kitchen, no moldy smell, and a bed that doesnโt feel like a sheet over bare springs. The attention to detail is above and beyond. I especially like the black velvet painting. The clean black velvet painting.
The Great House, sadly, is ghetto at best, in need of mold remediation at worst (it should be inspected, for everyone's health and safety). I canโt photograph a smell or a physical ailment that relies on nociception so the pics of stained sheets, dirt, fingerprints all over the walls and doors, the loose gapped exterior door, and mildew on the barely holding together bathroom window will have to do. I also can't photograph "sticky". Something sticky was on the floor in front of the mini fridge upon our arrival.
