"Stay Away Alert!"

2.0

I got scammed by this Hotel and the owner. I booked through an online service and the hotel reached out to tell me it was a mistake because they had no vacancies. The hotel owner told me he would not honor my reservation but charged my credit card anyway. He refused to refund the money and I had to go back and forth between my credit card and the travel agency to finally get my money back through a fraud report. Save yourself the hassle and stay away from this place.

"This hotel needs major maintenance and repairing. "

2.0

Room 25 reeked like cigarette smoke, the pillow and sheets were penetrated with the smell. In Room #24, the room we were switched to, the shower had a major leak on the faucet handles. In Room #31, the bathroom door was hard to open end close because the upper hinges were broken.

"Disappointed!!"

4.0

I have to be honest and say the room and building did not match the pictures. Noisy location and no facilities. Just a bed, shower, and wi-fi. Not what weary travelers were hoping for. Over priced for sure for us and probably the other 2 guests.

"For the price this is great!"

Amazing location one block back from the malecon. Walk to everything. Parking off street. Quiet at night. Clean and comfortable. Showers are hot and strong enough. Beds are quite comfortable. Excellent bargain hotel.

"Terrible maintenance and a lying owner."

2.0

Enrique (co-owner) had an Air BnB apartment that was in such disrepair, we couldn't stay there. We refused the apartment, Enrique then suggested we stay at his Hotel Chapala which he bought two months ago. He said the 2nd floor walk-up room was regularly $90/night. We were the only travelers in the whole place. The night after our arrival the posted a sign advertising rooms for 700 pesos (about $35). We ended up paying twice that! The room was junk. Hotel Chapala is a cheap crash pad centrally located. The tiles in the bathroom as well as the toilet were cracked and broken. The lamp over my head was precariously hung-missing retainers. The cheap curtains were held up by the tip piece of an old fishing rod. THERE IS NO BUILDING MAINTENANCE. The mattresses were comfortable. There is no pool or amenities. This is a dive hotel run by a guy who refused to reduce the doubled price we paid. If you're looking for a place to shoot up drugs, this could be your new home. Otherwise STEER CLEAR!!!!

"A Happy Experience, Easy on the Wallet"

10.0

I looked at the room and didn't want to stay here. It looked too basic and not up to U.S. standards. I was overruled and ended up being glad. For $55 a night right after Christmas, we got a room with 3 beds steps from the beach and the boardwalk. We walked to all our meals and the ATV rental down the street. Skip this if you love glamour and demand resort standards. But if you can look beyond the rough edges (and a few cracked tiles), there is a lot to recommend Chapala. The maid worked wonders every day. The management speaks English and takes customer service seriously. When one of our party lost his cell phone, they spoke to the person who found it, translated for us, and even drove us in their minivan to pick it up. They also helped resolve a misunderstanding with a fishing guide. Staying here was a happy experience that was easy on the wallet.

"Facelift ongoing"

8.0

First, the name of this place has changed to Nuevo Fan Felipe Hotel. There isn't currently a sign; just the name in the office window. The place is clean and the staff is helpful. The location is good. It's obvious that renovation work has been under way for some time. They haven't gotten to the furniture yet.

"Cheap and clean"

8.0

Stopped by here on a dirtbike trip with three guys. Paid about $40 for a three bed room. Was great for the price. It's in better shape than the photos on this site. Price was right. In general I've found that in Mexico, you pay significantly more for places that take reservations on the internet.

"Not recommended"

4.0

I am not sure what is meant when other reviewers have said this place is being remodeled because the room we had was in poor condition. The plaster was falling off wall in bathroom, wooden door was damaged, the bedding was very old, and overall was a dismal room. The TV did not work, but we didn't try very hard. There were only a few customers the night we stayed, so if there were better rooms, I wish they would have given one to us. On the positive side, the parking is secure, which is why we stayed, the wifi worked slowly, and the water in the sink (did not use the shower) was hot. We have stayed in very good hotels throughout Baja for the same price, so this place is not good value compared to others.

"What? No swimming pool?"

10.0

Chapala Hotel is on the main street, one up from the beach. Some hotels in San Felipe have swimming pools. But with the beach a street away, who needs a pool? Beside, that would up the hotel cost! The rooms are simple, but nice. Every time I go there, they are redoing/upgrading rooms. A car is not needed as there are restaurants, pubs and the beach minutes away.
