Zostel Kodaikanal

Zostel Kodaikanal is like a breath of fresh air.... It has the best social vibe I have witnessed across my travels... The nicest possible choice for a solo traveller in Kodaikanal, where most other hostels are located at scenic places but incredibly far from the main town and thus cut off,....functionality wise Zostel Kodaikanal was the best-- about 2kms from the main town, cabs charging 300ish are always available outside the hostel or u can trek down, that's fun too....The beds are comfortable, the common room area and the bonfire area was where we spent most of our time jamming to music or playing cards. They have a bonfire every night, perfect for the introductions and making friends...have to say the hosts Jay and Dev were wonderful... Be it the evening impromptu trip to see the meteor shower at a view point or the 24/7 shop for a late night binge or to the observatory.. I had a blast. Definitely coming back

Awful. We had to cancel our stay and find another accommodation. The room we booked (twin dorm to keep the costs down, as the pricing for this hostel is outrageous) was situated next to a communal outdoor dining area, kitchen and staff toilet. The room itself was damp, exposed, dirty sheets (stains and hairs) and completely rundown. It was honestly just gross and the staff (teenagers?) were on their phones outside the room being loud. We asked for an upgrade and the man at reception said that would be fine as a private double was available. The room wasnt great - bit worn and tatty and just as damp, but away from the kitchen and staff loos, so we accepted it. Then he said that we had to cancel the booking through booking.com in order to upgrade, but that would come with a cancellation fee, so we couldnt do that. He said 'we' would need to contact zostel head office to sort it out and laughed at us. Honestly, never staying at a zostel again. Tried to sort with head office via whatsapp as had no other contact info, and had no response until the evening, by which point we had left. Rooms and communal areas are nothing like the pictures. Even after apologising, tgeyre trying to charge us a cancellation fee. Disgraceful. Stay away
