"Wonderful Experience"

10.0

We have stayed in several B&B’s in Cape May over the years, and The Hugh is at the top of our list. The place is decorated beautifully and very clean. The innkeepers couldn’t have been more accommodating. Every request was granted… ice bucket with ice and wine glasses plus a cork screw. It rained almost all day so decided to stay in and eat cheese from the local cheese shop for lunch. Sandy provided plates and a cheese knife. Breakfast was phenomenal and John was delightful. Bed was very comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

"It’s Like a Fashion Designer’s Victorian Dream"

10.0

Incredible combination of elegance and coziness. Each room (I saw a few rooms as we were a group) has its own unique character and is surprisingly bright on the inside. The wraparound porch creates a tranquil retreat and a great place to spend time between the hearty breakfast and the gastronomic masterpiece that is dinner. Bed-and-breakfast aren’t usually known for having dinner service that could rival 11 Madison Park’s menu with equally creative vegan and vegetarian options. If you do eat meat, then you cannot miss the duck or the scallops if they happen to be on the evening’s menu. The dining room is bright with two walls of windows. The beach is a quick and easy walk and the hotel has plenty of bicycles to take for a ride with their own locks. Went there for a wedding and they made us all feel like family. I would definitely go back.

"Owners are fine as long as you don’t ask for fresh towels"

2.0

My husband I stayed at the Hugh for 2 nights while attending a family memorial service. When we returned to our room after a long hot day and to get ready for the service, we were quite surprised that our room had not been tidied and our towels were still damp from the night before. I called the owner and was told that they don’t freshen rooms unless asked due to covid, but we we’re not informed of this at check in. We went around and around on the phone and finally I said ok, thank you and hung up. Now with my husband in the shower I hear a knock on the door, it’s the husband. He is empty handed, not even fresh towels. (Even though Sandy claims on the Airbnb review, that he was coming to tidy up) He says, is there a problem? I tell him the situation and he goes on with the covid excuse, even though he is standing very close with no mask! He is now questioning me about where I have stayed during covid, with no intention of smoothing out the misunderstanding. He continued to berate me and left (although Sandy says I slammed the door in his face, which would be ridiculous on my part since he was supposedly there to tidy up!) We have stayed in many Bed and breakfasts and Airbnb’s here and overseas and have never been treated like this. I wrote a review on Airbnb and Sandy responded that I was rude and that her reviews say it all. In my book, whether she perceived my frustration as rudeness is irrelevant. A good innkeeper should be able to smooth a situation like this over and have the guest leave satisfied. I have seen on another platform that Sandy keeps bringing up her great reviews. I also have excellent reviews on Airbnb. The difference is the amount of money we paid to stay there! I was their guest, I wasn’t unruly, loud, drunken nor destructive. I simply asked for a service that is usually provided. And when there is a misunderstanding, it should be corrected even if the guest is frustrated. Sandy has some great reviews, but look further and you will find some bad ones.

"A gorgeous, comfortable, happy place to stay"

10.0

Located in the heart of the ever-idyllic Cape May, The Hugh is a charmingly chic and utterly peaceful oasis in the midst of the beach town's hubbub of melting ice cream, cawing gulls, and bustling shops. As a bed-and-breakfast based on the idea of happiness, The Hugh flashes a smile at every turn, from the extraordinary collection of artwork throughout (the Ellsworth Kelly piece is particularly breathtaking) to the delightful, color-based characteristics of each cozy, quiet room. The hosts, John and Sandy, are gracious, friendly, carefree, and thorough in their wish to maintain the happiness of all their guests. During each day of our stay they went out of our way to ensure we were comfortable and happy; during one particular breakfast, Sandy gave an artfully hodge-podged oyster shell to each guest. Speaking of breakfast, breakfast at The Hugh is absolutely delectable: think luxurious brioche French toast with homemade strawberry cream cheese, shakshuka sizzling in a cast iron pan, and an inventive 'breakfast pizza' topped with cheese, sausage, and mushrooms — all beautifully starting the day in the breezy sunroom of The Hugh. Straight-from-the-oven shortbread cookies and pound cake were served as late morning and early afternoon snacks, situated in the snack room amply stocked with treats, tea, coffee and other beverages. Location is key in this walking town, and The Hugh is only a handful of blocks from the ocean and even fewer blocks from the center of town. After just four days at The Hugh, we were joyfully rested, relaxed, and, most importantly, happy.

"Exceptional B&B with a modern touch"

10.0

My mom and I had a girls’ weekend for her birthday and chose the Hugh because of the excellent reviews, and because I personally loved the updated decor. We were not disappointed. The owners are lovely and ensured we had everything we needed. Breakfast was phenomenal! Our room was comfortable and very clean, and we could walk just about everywhere in town, and this was with my 79 year old mother. They don’t have parking on site because of the location, but about a half a block away is free street parking so it wasn’t a big deal. Do not let that deter you. This is a beautiful place to stay - you won’t be disappointed.

"A very special getaway"

10.0

We were in Cape May celebrating our 42nd Anniversary and The Hugh B&B was right across the street from where we used to live as a newly married couple. The accommodations could not have been better, from the delicious breakfast, to the immaculate room and very comfortable bed, to the wonderful wrap around porch. We very much appreciated the room air filters. Sandy and John, the owners, were very gracious and friendly. We hope to go back soon.
