"Friendly staff. Great experience."

Check in for the hotel was at the gift shop. It was super easy, and while we were there, we got to check out the gift shop and grab some coffee from Elta. Elta is a coffee shop located in the gift shop as well. They had a good selection of hot and cold flavored coffees. We booked online (well in advance) and stayed in the William Winter room. We went for the ghost experience. So I knew ahead of time that there was supposedly a voodoo priestess who was hired to try to save Kate. And supposedly, Kate died in this very room. We also booked a night tour. The night tour was great. Lauren (or Laura) was our tour guide. She was young (in her 20s) and you could tell that she thoroughly enjoyed her job. She was great at storytelling. We were able to walk the grounds any time during the night... and we did around 10:30pm. It was eerie but not very scary. We were not able to see or enter any other bedrooms or rooms throughout the main house at night. Not that you would normally get to anywhere else... but it would have been kinda cool to see each bedroom (before any guests put their personal belongings in there). Our room was very clean... the bathroom was pretty tiny but I knew ahead of time that it was actually in our room. Whereas some bedrooms had bathrooms located down the hall. I was determined not to leave my room and go down the hall just to potty in the middle of the night. 🤷‍♀️ We didn't have any kind of ghost experience during the night, but we psyched ourselves up enough that it took us hours just to fall asleep. The bed was not very comfortable and squeaked pretty loudly ever time we turned over. That was probably the only 2 complaints that I had with the room. (Tiny bathroom and noisy bed.) The air conditioner worked great- so we were pleasantly surprised. Old houses usually don't have great ACs. The next morning we took the day tour. Although it was very informative, they didn't really say much about the folklore. But I think most people are going there for the haunted nature of the place, so it would have been nice to have more info on the day tour about that. As a plantation...and historically- it doesn't seem nearly as fascinating as the other places in town. Also, in the morning, we had breakfast on site. $16 for buffet breakfast, I think it was their 1st day trying it out in a different area than the main restaurant. We had scrambled eggs, french toast, bacon, breakfast sausage, hashbrown casserole, and some awesome cheesy grits. Overall, I loved my stay there and would definitely do it again. I would want to spend the night in the Doll Room (Fannie Williams room) next time. You know, if you want the ghost experience, you gotta try all the rooms - just in case. 🤣 So, our stay was great. The room was nice. Tour guide gets a 5 star 🌟 all by herself. Breakfast was really good. Day tour was ok. All of the staff that we interacted with were super nice. My coffee at Elta was great as well. I had an iced latte with wedding cake flavor added to sweeten it.

"Quiet, pretty location, otherwise nothing special"

6.0

We visited in July 2025 as part of a last minute side trip. We stayed in the Ruffin Stirling Room. We got in around 8:30pm so it was already dark when we arrived. It would have been helpful to have a property map so we could known where we could walk. We live in the suburbs of a large city and it was pleasant to sit on the porch and hear the night sounds (this is what earned it a 3rd star, otherwise I’d give it 2 stars). There are death stairs leading to this room and three others. The bathroom was poorly lit and whether or not you get a warm shower must depend on whether other guests are showering as well; my shower was lukewarm but my husband’s was hot. We never saw anything slightly haunted or spooky during our visit. The room was pretty but the bed was loud and creaky and had a cheap mattress like what you would find at a budget motel. We’ve stayed at other bed & breakfasts and historic inns and were a little disappointed that there weren’t better sheets/linens and that the breakfast was only served from like 7:30-9am but the night caretaker couldn’t tell us anything about what it consisted of. We didn’t bother to get up for it.

Beautiful grounds. Cabins were perfect and in walking distance to restaurant and gift shop. The tour guide was fantastic, we went in the mystery tour at night and a tour during the day. Very tranquil atmosphere.

Fun experience @ historical residence and plantation. Included was a fascinating tour of the house replete with some original furniture dating to 1796. Well worth a visit and the tour even if you choose not to stay. There are other accommodations available on the property if you are not keen on a room in a room in the 'haunted' house.

I enjoyed everything about this property. The cabin was beautiful and location perfect. The tour guides were very knowledgable about the history of the house and the haunted history of the house. Restaurant 1796 had wonderful service and delicious food. We had a wonderful girls trip and will do this again soon!!!!

The grounds keeper was a delightful person worth her weight in gold. As a whole, the plantation was idyllic. The room was pleasant. Would have been very nice to have a refrigerator and ice machine more readily available. The tours were very informative, fun, and interesting. The restaurant on the grounds was outstanding.
