Hmong Sister House - Hostel

Okay, so the bed was basically a wooden plank with a mat, but outside the window were the stars. Like, actual stars. The kind you forget exist when you live in the city. I didn’t sleep much, but I didn’t mind.

You don’t need makeup or nice shoes or even a plan. You just need to show up curious and kind. That’s what makes this place work.

The hills here have a sound. Not loud, just a soft echo. Wind, chickens, someone singing far off. You feel like the whole mountain’s breathing around you.

Lily wasn’t just a host—she made the experience. She took us walking through her village and explained so many things. She doesn't speak a lot, but when she talks, it sticks.

J’ai eu beaucoup de mal avec la salle de bain/toilettes… ce n’est pas le lieu le plus propre ou confortable que j’ai eu… Faites attention à ne pas laisser vos affaires sur le sol il y a des cafards. Les chambres sont très très peu isolées voir pas du tout.

The views are incredible and the food is good, big portions. We did an organized trekking tour by the homestay and the lady who guided us (I can't remember her name) was very nice, and told us a lot about the culture and the area. The mosquito net on the bed was great too.

The room was pretty dirty and there was a hole in the wall above the bed where anyone could have looked into the room to see us sleeping. The windows in the room also did not close so all creatures came in whenever they wanted. However, we knew not to expect luxury when booking this homestay, but some privacy would have been nice. Also, the lady who works at the reception desk at the homestay seemed really nice initially, however we felt that she was constantly grumpy with us after. We felt a bit uncomfortable to be honest. We were excited to experience the feeling of an authentic local homestay in Sapa but ended up feeling like burdens to the family.

The friengly of Lily make me feel like home. Hope I have a chance to come back som day.
