The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu - a member of the Leading Hotels of the World-

Staff was excellent and very helpful. Location makes it easy to walk to sites, dining, and interesting shops. Rooms are spacious, clean, quiet, and comfortable. Drink bar is well stocked (and restocked). Great breakfast. Enjoyed the lounge. Good food in the roof top bar. We will return next year.

To start this review, I don’t think you would find a better place to stay in Kyoto. Pictures do not reflect the classy, stylish, and historical atmosphere this hotel provides. It’s an example of quiet, timeless luxury with unbelievable attention to detail. Tall beautiful corridors, little sculptures, scents, lighting, books telling the history of this place - I couldn't stop taking pictures. Location: Excellent, situated on the beautiful Kiyomizu hill in the most scenic part of the old town, offering 'Memoirs of the Geisha' views. Yes, will take you a bit more time to get there by taxi during busy tourist hours but the hotel totally worth it. Service & Rooms: Attentive, high-quality service. Housekeeping is next-level in its attention to detail and cleanliness. Beds and rooms are super comfortable with excellent sound isolation. Whatever you need - and adapter or water is there the same second. Must-See: The K36 rooftop terrace is essential for sunset views.

The hotel is exceptionally well-thought-out, but two areas require improvement to match the general level of the place: Breakfast: The variety of the buffet needs to be increased for a hotel of this level. including for example a selection of Japanese food and high quality European bread. The presentation of some items, like the ham floating in warm water, was confusing and not up to standard. Concierge Service: While friendly and eager to help, the team lacks deep, exclusive local knowledge. Recommendations come down towards 'TripAdvisor' obvious choices, not the unique, local experiences guests at this level are seeking. Having established connections for hard-to-book, exclusive local restaurants would be a significant enhancement.

We're huge fans of The Leading Hotels of the World and this property was no exception. The grounds are stunning, every time we left and came back we said it felt like entering a private oasis. The staff was very personal and attentive to our needs - helping with activities around the hotel like booking the private spa room (you must do this!!), calling taxis, booking dinner reservations, etc. We loved visiting the guest lounge after a long day of sightseeing to make a nice drink and relax and grab a few snacks. We also though the breakfast offered at the guest lounge was more than enough. Definitely don't miss out on the rooftop bar - great views, service, food and drinks! We ended up going a few nights in a row. Room was gorgeous (of course) with all the helpful amenities.

Don't get me wrong - I would live at this hotel if I could - but the one slight downside was the location on a very busy touristy street near Kiyomizu Temple. Taxis had a hard time turning up the street, so we often would get dropped off down below and walk up (which was fine, just an added logistic). It's kind of far from the Kyoto subway line, so we relied on taxis the whole time (which honestly was a nice break between Tokyo and Osaka).

I can’t say enough about this wonderful hotel located in an old elementary school in a great location for walking. The common areas, restaurants and rooms are beautiful and the staff is extremely helpful and very nice. I loved the roof top bar at sunset and “the library” for breakfast. Ask to see the old before and after photograph book of the process of transforming a classic old school into a classic new boutique hotel. Hope I can come back again one day.

Truly an exceptional stay in the heart of Kyoto’s historic temple district. This hotel was by far and away the highlight of our 3 week stay in Japan. Facilities and staff really set the bar high.
