Hotel El Capitan

Historic Hotel built in the 1930s in far West Texas. It's a really fun stay and we especially like to be there on New Year's Eve for their excellent dinner! Near the Guadalupe Mountain State Park and Carlsbad caverns, New Mexico. Also a great stopping point when you're on your way to Big Bend national Park.

After a long road trip from New Mexico, I arrived after dark with my very elderly dog and luggage. A friend called ahead to inform Anita at the front desk of my imminent arrival, to ask her to please help me, I entered the lobby and Anita greeted ne and wheeled a luggage trolley to my SUV. She insisted on unloading, the car and filled the cart while I walked my unsteady dog into the hotel. She even insisted on carrying my very large, heavy travel purse! Anita brought me to my room and unloaded the cart. Then my dog and I went downstairs for a wonderful, welcome dinner. The restaurant staff set a small table for me in the lobby just outside the restaurant, near the fireplace, as dogs are not permitted in the restaurant. I had a delicious meal and a glass of wine while my old girl slept beside me on her travel mat. The hotel is lovely, the staff is helpful, and Anita is an exceptional employee . I reserved a room for my return trip and am looking forward to my stay.

Breakfast was better than expected with eggs and bacon. Hotel was a very neat little place. Courtyard was pretty. Housekeeper Angela? Was very nice and went out of her way to accommodate us.

Front desk staff was not very friendly. Bell cart tires were flat and hard to use for moving luggage. Coke machine was empty.

Charming hotel with history and amenities. Super fast complimentary wifi. Fantastic restaurant (Henry's) with great meals. Noticed the nice renovated room. It was our second visit and we will be back in a couple months.

We have stayed at this hotel many times since 2018, on our trip to Arizona. This is absolutely the worst stay EVER! It started w/the luggage rack, of which there was only one. There were two new ones sitting in a box that had not been assembled yet. The luggage rack was in TERRIBLE condition! We travel w/a lot of luggage..the cart was full. The wheels were messed up. It was very hard for me to turn and guide. My husband has a bad back, so couldn’t help. I pulled a muscle in my back trying to move and turn it. The only comment from the desk, as she stood there and watched me…”the racks came in yesterday, we haven’t put them together yet”. So thanks a lot. As 73 yr old woman, I was just putting on a show for all to watch. We’ve had our dinner in the restaurant, every time we stayed at the hotel. This time was the worst experience ever. The service was slow. It took forever for a salad. When I asked about it, I was told it would be out shortly. It never came…went to another table instead. The waitress was apologetic, didn’t really help, since we were really hungry. The rib eye steak was terrible! What little meat there was,tasted good…there was way too much fat! This little THIN 10 oz steak was $44. When I showed the waitress, she said there was supposed to be fat. I said yes but not that much. I asked her if she would eat it…she said no. They did comp the meal, but since I couldn’t eat half of my dinner, it didn’t really matter. Needless to say…they’ve lost our business.

Consistantly good

Worst experience that could have been mitigated if staff were trained in customer care. Room wasn't read (no care) told we cannot park am RV in parking lot ("don't worry, you won't get hit") no hot water, had to suggest we had to have a solution. No concern for any of these circumstances. Then sat for 20 minutes with our water glasses in the restaurant before leaving unserved. They thanked us for coming? Poorly dressed staff at front desk and restaurant. All this for $270 for a suite that wasn't a suite.

Stayed Thanksgiving day. The person on duty was Anita. She was so cheerful and went out of way to make us comfortable. Even cleaned off a table in the lobby for us to sit and eat our dinner in front of the fireplace. As the main dining area was closed for the holidays. Made a fresh pot of coffee for us. Will definitely stay there when we return in January.
