Hotel Yakushima Sanso

Helpful staff, even staff who did not speak English were very helpful and patient.

This hotel was booked for us by Y.E.S. Yakushima tours and it was a great choice that we really enjoyed. If you've stayed at a non-chain hotel that has been around a while you know not to expect the Ritz. It's a little worn down, but it's clean and safe and the staff are great. Our room was a traditional Japanese-style with lots of room and the most beautiful view of the mountains and the Anbo river! There are public baths separated by gender you can soak in which was nice. We didn't have dinner there (which we probably should have since the restaurant selection within walking distance is minimal) but had breakfast every morning and it was always tasty and filling.

The Hotel is a very good for all people who come to the island to go hiking. As this hotel is specialised for these visitors. The hotel offers hiking equipment which you can rent and also prepares breakfast and lunch bento boxes, which you can take in the morning before you go hiking. Additionally, there is also a common room where you can sit and chill, drink a coffe, enjoy the view over the river and on the mountain and there is also an japanese bath where you can bath traditionally. Moreover, the hotel an excellent location for people who go hiking, as the bus station makina is near by, where you can take the local bus which drives you to the mountain trail bus.The city center nabo is also near, where you find some restaurants. Furthermore, after forgetting a kindle in the hotel room, the hotel was so kind to send it to Tokyo.

The Hotel is a little bit older it must be clear that it is very traditional, as the rooms have japanese futon beds. It was an interesting experience, but after a 10 h hiking trip, a bed with a normal mattress would be more comfortable. This is not a real critic, moreover an information to people who are not familiar with futon beds. Maybe there are also rooms with beds and mattresses, we got this one.

Gotta love Yakushima and I would probably stay here again if I returned. I really enjoyed having a beer looking out my window, down the river to the mysterious looking mountains. It was really cool! I had a comfortable stay after an adventuous day. It was handy to have a good start to the day with the provided breakfast and there are some great dinner options a short walk across the bridge or the place next door on the river. I really enjoyed my stay in Yakushima and would happily stay here again if I returned.

The onsen is a bonus really and its good that they swap over the mens and ladies so you can try both. Its just a shame that they didn't incorporate what could have been an epic view out to the ocean or up the river to the mountains or across to the town. Its a small onsen and having a great view would have made the onsen great.

Location is good. Store within walking distance. Sunrise can be seen from the room window.

We had a Japanese style room facing the river. The hotel is conveniently located next to a bridge which leads into the centre of Anbo. The accommodation has laundry and drying facilities suitable for a hiker and a public bathing room. Would stay here again!

I loved the beautiful view. The room was comfortable and perfect for a solo traveler. I liked that it had a Japanese traditional feel even if it was not a traditional building. it was also nice to have the sentō and the laundry machines to use. I made friends with one of women who worked there and she was so nice and welcoming to me. The owner of the hotel was friendly and brought me around to see some nature highlights. The hotel felt like an extended family. I was here for a week and was very content and I would stay here again.

People called my room a lot when I was trying to sleep or relax, also there’s a weird music that plays at 6 am (across the whole village - not just the hotel) to wake people up to go to work. I got used to it but it was quite annoying to be woken up at 6am everyday. Also the owner of the hotel was a little bit TOO friendly and tried to hold my hand. Maybe it’s a culture difference but it was a bit shocking for me as in my country this is totally inappropriate.
