This is a tricky one.
There is no doubt that Green Fig is a special place, largely due to its location and breathtaking views, anything else pales in to insignificance and it seems a bit trivial to pick fault in other aspects of the hotel/stay, however, I will keep it balanced and real.
It was a strange start for us, we arrived after a 12 hour journey absolutely shattered, hot and hungry and ready to get to our room and settle in. There seemed to be a few words between the reception staff who advised that they were just making sure the room was ready. After a few minutes, we were told that we were getting a complimentary upgrade, we were to be shown 2 rooms and we could choose which one we would like! You can imagine, we were delighted and very excited to see what was on offer! After a further few minutes we were told that we were now not being given an upgrade and were in fact being taken to our original room! I didn't want to create any fuss and really just wanted to get to our room but, nevertheless, it was a little disappointing to be offered the carrot and then it taken away again with no real communication.
Anyhow, we were shown to Room 105. Near the top of the property, old in style and very compact but lots of character and a fabulous balcony within the trees and a spectacular view of the Petit Piton, as mentioned before, it really is breathtaking! The room is air conditioned but the unit was having to work overtime in an attempt to keep it cool, it was perfectly adequate though.
There is a free shuttle to the town upon request (try to give 1 hours notice). We did use this service but also walked to the town several times, be aware, the walk back is not for the faint hearted, it's very steep and in 32 degrees, is a bit of a challenge, really enjoyed it though.
Continental breakfast is included and comprised of a plate of mixed fresh fruit followed by toast, butter, peanut butter, jam and maybe a piece of banana bread/cake. It was adequate but not special. You could pay for alternative breakfast which we did sometimes, which was lovely, we had the American and also the Lucian pancakes, each between 14-18 USD.
We stayed at the hotel for dinner a few nights, again, it was fine, not exactly special but good enough.
The staff, are on the whole, lovely, very friendly and helpful and the vibe is very laid back and relaxed which we enjoyed.
We cannot forget the steps, yes, there are a lot, some very steep and uneven, all adds to the charm. There really is no rush anyway, so just take your time when navigating the property and take in the views!
Maintainance is an issue here, yes it is rustic and I love that but there are also things that are in disrepair that push the 'rustic' narrative a bit too far. There are tiles missing in the swiwwing pool, there is a screw sticking up on the bottom of the pool, there are chairs that are broken, banisters on stair rails that are broken etc etc. I appreciate this is a never ending, thankless task, however, there does need to be some more attention to detail, even just to a safety standard.
One other thing, on day 3, we once again got offered a complimentary upgrade and this time it happened! We got moved to 331, this room was totally the opposite to 105, very new, huge, modern, great aircon etc. It really was stunning! We feel very lucky to have experienced both styles of room while there.
To summarise, this really is a special place, it just needs some attention to detail to make it match up to its massive potential! Thank you for having us, we feel very lucky to have stayed in such a beautiful part of the world.
