My husband, Ruben, and I love unwinding on Mexico’s beaches, and this time we set our sights on Mahahual, near the Belize border. We spent 10 glorious days soaking up the sun, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and leaving stress far behind.
If you're familiar with Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum, Mahahual offers a totally different vibe. It's quieter, more relaxed, and full of natural Caribbean charm. No thumping club music—just soft, soothing sounds as you stroll the beachside malecón.
The beach itself is shallow and lagoon-like, perfect for lounging. We snorkeled right off the shore and also took a boat out to the stunning Banco Chinchorro, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system, which is the second largest in the world. The calm, clear water was ideal for spotting vibrant marine life.
With sunny skies every day, gentle humidity, and that laid-back energy, Mahahual was everything we needed—and more.
Where We Stayed: Noah Hotel & Suites
Mahahual may not have a ton of hotels or restaurants, but what it offers is quality, charm, and true relaxation. After 10 peaceful days here, my husband and I can confidently say this beach town is a must-visit for travelers looking to unwind away from the crowds of Cancun or Tulum.
NOAH HOTEL & SUITES is hands down the best hotel in Mahahual. Clean, modern, and beachy with cream and sand-toned décor. The minimalist design is calming, and the entire staff, especially manager Oswaldo, were incredibly friendly and helpful. Everything we asked for, more water bottles, towels, and shampoo, we got delivered to our room, and with a smile.
We stayed in multiple rooms to get a feel for them all:
Room 108: Budget-friendly with a private bathroom down the hallway. This room has a window facing the side street and has a nice closet and lots of space. The TV didn’t work well, and it didn’t have cable, but when we reported the issue to management, they fixed it right away. It shouldn’t be an issue anymore.
Room 103: Similar to Room 108 but smaller, with a window that faces the hallway. The benefit to this room is that if you are light sensitive when you sleep, this room gets dark and has a nicer TV with cable. The private bathroom is down the hallway and not connected to the room, but it’s private.
Room 203: Spacious apartment with an amazing beachfront patio—great for families. The bedroom has a king-size bed and is separate from the large living room and dining room area that boasts a full kitchen.
Room 107 (Honeymoon Suite): Large beachfront suite with a great patio and bathroom. This room is romantic and is much larger than the other studios.
Room 401 (Presidential Suite): 360° views of the entire beach and mangrove behind the building. This apartment is on the fourth floor and it's the largest apartment in the building. It has two king beds—ideal for larger families.
Room 110: Our favorite! Not beachfront, but spacious, quiet, with a partial ocean view and a large patio. The connecting bathroom was larger than the rest. We will likely rent this one again when we return to Mahahual.
Malecón 21 restaurant (connected to the hotel): This restaurant is probably the fanciest of all the places we experienced, but it’s still beach casual. Our favorite meal on the menu was the Tacos Pibil (three to an order with tortillas made of beets), and the burgers were juicy and thick. Beach service is a huge plus. On the pricier side, but the service is good.
Mahahual is the perfect destination for laid-back beach lovers, and we’re already planning our return—especially to Room 110 at Noah Hotel & Suites!
