"Excellent (and expensive) with some issues"

8.0

We stayed in the hotel for six nights at the beginning of March. Here are some observations. Pros: It is very clean. It is fairly close to the key sites and restaurants in and around the main plaza (about a 2 minute walk to the plaza, about 15 minutes to the nicer restaurants). The room windows face an interior courtyard so there is no noise at all from the street (which apparently can be a problem in Oaxaca). We stayed in one of the suites because we wanted a second window to let more light into the room; it was fine. The hotel restaurant is quite good: the service there is excellent, and we particularly enjoyed breakfast on mornings (most) when we had to rush out and, in the couple of evenings when we were too tired to go out again, enjoyed the tortilla soup for dinner. (The restaurant is a little loud with street noise as they do keep the huge wooden door to the street open but that did not bother us … it’s a city.) Cons: There is no concierge and only one person who staffs the front desk and seems to be generally responsible for everything. We asked just once if they could call and make a dinner reservation for us (we made the rest well in advance before we left home), and were told the restaurant hadn’t answered the phone when they called. We had the impression they were just too busy with all of their other responsibilities so didn’t make much of an effort to follow up (or to offer us another suggestion at another restaurant). For this price (and it IS pricey for Oaxaca) they really need an additional staff member who can reach out to and for guests with recommendations and assistance booking. The supposed roof-top “terrace” is just an unfinished roof with metal beams lying around, a single table with umbrella and a couple of uninstalled hot tubs leaning on their sides. Sitting on a terrace in the cool of the evening is an important part of the experience in Oaxaca and this shouldn’t be advertised unless they really have one. Clearly the intention is to improve it but as of now it has not happened. As far we could tell, the “cava bar” was not open during our entire week stay there. We chose this hotel (and were willing to pay more for it …) because it looked like it would be quiet and we’d be able to sleep. As mentioned above, there is no street noise. However, we did have noise problems on 3 separate nights. In each case, the problem was other guests. In one case, a couple conducted a screaming match (in Spanish) for three hours, from 4 a.m – 7 a.m., at which point we gave up, got dressed and left. The police were called and dealt with it calmly and eventually the couple was removed from the hotel, but not until we’d lost a night’s sleep. The next couple of nights a different group of guests (they occupied 3 or 4 rooms and may have been related) persisted in yelling conversations (in Spanish) across the interior courtyard from the open doorways of their rooms. Bad enough when they did it in the late afternoon, but they also did it every single night at around 2 am when they came back from the bars. The same group allowed their boys to play soccer INSIDE the hotel, kicking the ball off the walls in the interior courtyard and even in the main dining area. Again, bad enough when they were doing it in the late afternoon, but they took it up again when they returned at 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. Of course, we understand that a hotel cannot completely control rude guests. However, other than calling the police that one time, it seemed the hotel never did anything about it at all (we could see the front desk person was annoyed with the soccer playing, but they just made a face and sat at their desk). Because all of the rooms face directly onto the one small interior courtyard, noise from other (rude) guests can be quite a problem.

"Terrible!!!"

3.0

Breakfast....The coffee machine was broken, I had to bus our own dishes, we were told they had a bar..but it was closed on Mondays...and Tuesdays, not until the late afternoon, we had a wheelchair access room. Still, we could not fit our small wheelchair in the toilet...they finally removed the glass, the telephone was broken, no room service, they found out later the batteries were dead, we could not turn the TV into English for hours...then s fabulous housekeeper stayed in our room for an hour and figured it out..BLESS HER!!! The food was great..fabulous I would say...but don't expect any cocktails or coffee!

opps..I wrote it all on the top

"A charming place to stay a couple of blocks from the Zocalo"

9.0

The food was excellent. The location lovely. The service was friendly if unhurried as is typical in Oaxaca.

The hotel bar wasn’t open much although there are plenty of places to drink nearby.

"New hotel in a historic city. Good location great service."

Super clean and comfortable. It has a colonial feel up front inside with modern spotless rooms. Very nice I’d stay here again.

I wish the rooms which are large had a small sofa or a couple of lounge chairs the seat is not that comfortable.

"Beautiful and oh so stylish!"

10.0

I spent 4 nights here and was enamored with the exquisite style. Minimalistic but so classy. White is the predominant color set off by the black railings and terracotta-color marble floor tiles. The designers have done a magnificent job. The rooms have everything one needs and the bed is wonderfully comfortable. Staff was helpful and friendly at all times. 5 min walk from the cathedral - don’t be put off by the underwhelming facade - it is beautiful inside. Everything newly renovated and spotlessly clean. I can’t fathom out why a place like this with one’ll positive reviews and almost all ratings at 5* comes up in TripAdvisor at position 60! It leaves me suspicious of the position ratings here on this site.
