Possum Lodge

Location fab. Right next to the lake for a swim and a short walk to doubtful sound cruises. Comfortable bunk beds in dorm rooms.

Kitchen was tiny. All communal areas (toilets/ showers/ kitchen/ lounge) are all too small for the vast number of people staying there. There are various rooms but they also allow so many camper and onsite and there is just not enough cooking space/ communal space for everyone to use.

It was near Te Anau

Very expensive for limited service and run down .No TV and useless wifi. Too few towels when asked they were brought the morning we were leaving. Furniture and place was rundown and not as. presented in Booking.com Asked for rater reduction because of disappointing place but was refused.

Quiet location. A step back in time. Units were 50s style. Formica tables and plastic chairs. Bed was very comfortable and shower worked well. It was clean and comfortable

No one on reception. Had difficulty finding our cabin.outside of cabins need a good paint

For those who love sandflies, dampness, and dilapidation, this is the place to be. Poorly equipped kitchen Kitchen too small for the size of the establishment Unsanitary facilities

Very dark to the nearest toilets. Slippery stairs, just lucky I took a torch. Very hard beds, so not much sleep 😴

A bit antiquated

Friendly staff. I especially like family run places like this. This place is quiet, has a diverse selection of rooms such as self-contained rooms, hostel rooms, campsites and caravan sites. You can meet people from everywhere here. Although some people complain about sandflies in their reviews, I was lucky this time. There were very few. If there are, they have screens on the windows so as long as you keep your door closed you should be ok when inside. The kitchen is large and it's easy to use the supplied baskets to store your food I like that it is convenient to board the Doubtful Sound Cruise by just walking over there through the scenic forest trail. Also, a great way to hike the Fiordland Nat'l Park trails using the convenient water taxi service, also just a short hike away. I did the Circle Track. It's a challenge, but the view at the peak is worth it! There are other trails there too. In addition, there are trails on this side to Lake Manapouri scenic sights. There are a few restaurants in town also easy to walk to. I liked the Manapouri Cafe & Dairy for breakfast as the ladies there are a hoot! Get the kiwi breakfast if you want to fill up for a long hike. Then, after a day of hiking, it's over to "The Church" for some beers and good food. Lots of locals go there so that makes it even more fun! I also like Manapouri because it's not crowded like Te Anau. It's just hard to get a place to stay here since there are so few available. But, if you can get in, forget about your car for a few days and just enjoy the nice peaceful feeling of the area, and especially Possum Lodge. Don't let the name scare you! It's not brimming with possums 😆!
