Location and atmosphere were good

Too run down and pricey for that type of accomodation.

"Excellent location"

8.0

It is excellently located for activities in Doubtful Sound, like Manapouri, and Te Anau. It is inexpensive, with basic but clean shared facilities designed for camping or staying in the small cabins. (There are also some self-contained small motel type rooms) The staff/owners were very friendly.

"Simple budget accommodation, close to the Patea Doubtful Sound Pier"

7.0

We stayed in one of the budget double rooms. While very simply furnished, we slept comfortably and certainly appreciated the flyscreen over the window (somewhat of a rarity in older properties in Aotearoa NZ!). It was lovely to listen to the sounds of the birdlife and the lake from our room. The lodge site is also a pleasant short walk to the cafe & pier where you get the boat for the first leg of the Patea Doubtful Sound Tour. I used the unisex shower & toilet in the same building as the lounge and they were good. The Venison burger from the Manapouri Cafe & Dairy was quite good. For the book nerds, you *must* check out the Two Week Bookshops on Home St (as seen in the 'Bookseller at the End of the World' series).

Since Possum Lodge is right on the junction of the Waiau River and Lake Manapouri, you *will* get sandflies. It is just a fact of life in NZ - if you are staying near water (particularly running water), there will also be sandflies. Bring good repellant. The internet is a bit hit and miss - we put this down to being in a small country town and somewhat isolated. Speaking of being a small country town, FYI there are limited places in Manapouri to get groceries. Manapouri Cafe & Dairy has a small selection of everyday groceries so you can get things like bread or milk, but if you are coming for a few days and you don't want to eat out, you will need to go to stock up in a bigger town first.

"Connecteer met mensen en natuur"

7.0

"Cheap but shabby."

6.0

Beautiful location great for the Lake and trip to Doubtful Sound. Comfy bed and crisp clean bedding. Hot shower and hairdryer in situ.

Shabby cabin with dirty carpet and lots of squashed sand flies on the wall. Very small kitchen area for the size of the site and poorly provisioned - only found 3 mugs over the 2 days and 1 teaspoon! Pans were poor quality with broken handles and had to clean them before using.
