The Ritz-Carlton, Portland

I traveled to Portland with 2 adult daughters to use an airline credit that I refused to just give to American Airlines! The hotel was great. The staff were very friendly and responsive to our questions about getting around the town. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable and always engaged with us as we ventured in and out to shop. Our room was very comfortable - two queen beds. We traveled from the east coast and had a little jet lag, but there was plenty of space for us to relax. I was surprised there was no desk in the room though. The bathroom is large and worked great for three women! The double sinks and a wet area for the tub and shower were fabulous. I dislike bathrooms that are so small that they quickly fill up with used towels and washcloths making the area uncomfortable to use until the room is serviced. Not the case here. We enjoyed being in the room! My trip was short, and we weren’t able to try the restaurant or other onsite amenities. But the location was perfect for the places we wanted to visit in Portland. Overall, a great facility that is staffed with friendly people. I’m a picky person. I would stay here again.

I love the swimming pool how it views Mt.Hood, staff makes sure you have everything you need. breakfast was amazing. Enjoyed the bar down stairs for night caps. I will definitely be returning !

Sort of had to figure out that you need your room key on you at all times to open all doors and use elevators but I understand that it is for safety reasons.

Great rooms, new and clean. Nice area to pull into to drop off bags. Room service on the other hand was terrible. The food was terribly cooked and unimpressive for a 5 star hotel. The service aspect of it was great though. Too many great restaurants in Portland to bother with the in room dining.

This is the second time I have stayed at this property and the facility and people are all top notch. From Mary in the Lounge to the General Manager- Marie Browne, everyone is extremely well trained. As my mother always said, it starts at the top and Marie clearly understands and lives this. The property is spotlessly clean and everyone one (without fail) is friendly and helpful. Thank you Marie for another great stay!

Outstanding hospitality team

Friendly staff, the rooms were nicely furnished, the restaurant worked very well for us as a family with friends and the food was delicious.

We thought the parking was very expensive, the breakfast at the club lounge was not up to scratch. The housekeeping missed doing up our room once…

I rarely write reviews as my experiences are generally great and when they aren't it is normally a minor issue often resolved onsite. My wife and I are very frequent travelers having been to numerous countries and stayed in countless hotels. For the past three decades we have been to Portland more than 100 times and stayed in every hotel in downtown and a few in other areas. We have been frequent guests of the Nines almost feeling like it was a home away from home. With the opening of the Ritz we decided to give it a try despite the mixed reviews about it finding its footings as a new property and it being over priced . We have stayed twice in their top suite for five nights each stay. The property is stunning despite some serious design flaws (master bathroom night light and fan that can't be turned off, mediocre water pressure in the shower, no outlets near the main table that is the only place that functions as a desk - despite the category being Executive Suite) and the staff do try to do their best but it feels like they are young and poorly trained. Definitely in the bottom quartile of hotel staffs we have dealt with. Of particular concern is the lack of internal communication and arbitrary policies and procedures. On our most recent stay when checking in the front desk/concierge could not locate a bag that we had left from the previous stay (despite being told when leaving a few months earlier that it would be well looked after). It ultimately turned out that their "security department" had discarded the bag. Why would they do that??? While they did compensate us for the value of the items lost, there were a couple of things that were irreplaceable. There was barely an apology and no one spoke with us personally just a couple of canned e-mails and a credit on the bill. Very disappointing. We could have accepted that mistakes are made and just moved on, but we just checked out about an hour ago and had a truly horrible experience. After the prior experience we were told that if we wanted to leave items for an extended period for a future stay we should procure a piece of luggage to leave. We did so and carefully packed our items to leave along with a fan (that we had to leave fully assembled because housekeeping had discarded the packaging without being told to do so). Upon checking out we told the front desk person that we hoped to leave two items, the piece of luggage we were told to get and the fan. After a few minutes of "checking" with someone in the back we were told that we could not leave items for longer than 30 days even though we already had a future reservation. Now we had an extra bag that was not packed for travel but for storage. Fortunately my wife's brother lives in Portland and we had just enough time to get to his place and leave both items there before heading to the airport. It is incomprehensible why we would have been told that we could leave items and to get another piece of luggage when they have a "policy" prohibiting this practice. While this is not the typical travel scenario for most travelers, that is beside the point it more speaks to the total asinine, random, stupid policies of the property, the poor training of the staff and the lack of customer service for a venue that is charging 30-40% more than anyone else in the market. If what you want is a beautiful property and you are willing to roll the dice on service and pay a premium then you may not care about the issues we experienced. GOOD LUCK
