Blue Surf Sanctuary

After staying around the lively Santa Teresa near Playa Carmen, arriving at Blue Surf Sanctuary was like landing at an oasis. Leah, our delightful host, made sure our stay was nothing short of amazing. She was not only super fun and helpful but had a smile that could light up the whole place! From fresh coconuts to watermelon and passion fruit, Leah ensured we tasted every bit of the fresh goodness Costa Rica had to offer. Our room was huge, and they even set up a crib for our little 7-month-old adventurer. We spent lazy afternoons lounging in hammocks, chatting away while overlooking the inviting pool. Speaking of the pool, it was a much-needed refresher after our beach escapades. Don't get me wrong, the beach (which was literally footsteps away) was a blast, but nothing beats a splash in the pool to cool off in the afternoon! One of the best parts? It felt like we had the entire place to ourselves most of the time. And can we talk about that outdoor kitchen? Totally Instagram-worthy and perfect for whipping up delicious meals with all the local ingredients. Although we couldn't resist the temptation of the nearby restaurants (seriously, so many great options!). We'd book this place again in a heartbeat. We could definitely hear the lively hum of cars and trucks passing by during the day, even from inside the room. However, this is quite common in Costa Rica as houses aren't typically insulated. The noise would quiet down at night, which wasn't a big bother for us. It would have been a nice addition to be able to rent surfboards directly from Blue Surf Sanctuary without having to take lessons. Other than these minor points, we loved everything about our stay

Close to road, can be loud

We LOVED our stay. It was a little slice of paradise. Our bungalow was a great size, and was luxurious. We loved the key code locks as it meant we didn't need to worry about bringing a key to the beach or needing duplicate keys etc. The shared kitchen was perfect, so spacious, well equip and clean. We loved the pool, lovely and shady for the heat of the day. There is even storage for your surf boards rented from else where. There is a cafe just over the road serving food all day. There is also a bar/restaurant right down the road (100m) where you can enjoy sunset, margaritas and even rent surf boards by the day or for a couple of hours.

The room could have had more drawers or a wardrobe to hang clothes. It also is close to the road which becomes very noisy at around 5:30/6am in the morning. The window curtains don't block the light so this also woke us early in the morning. We used our travel eye masks and ear plugs for the whole stay. (this was not a problem anywhere else in costa rica). It is also a LONG and HOT walk to town, either via the road or the beach, will take you 1 hour. lots of people use quad bikes or motor bikes but the road is so dusty and not paved.

We liked the property managers, very accommodating. Short walk to the beach. We liked the shared large, well equipped communal kitchen and pool onsite.

Backs onto a very noisy main dirt road. Our bungalow had a few deficiencies: hot water not turned on all of the way, shower tap broken and the toilet running. The toilet was fixed right away.

Toro is the an amazing surf instructor. He will work with you until you improve, and he always makes each lesson so fun. The beach is incredibly nice, and the waves are perfect size for learning to surf. Strongly recommend coming here and getting surf lessons!

I am a novice surfer really just learning and Toro was absolutely incredible. His knowledge of surfing and his calm thoughtful style helped me learn the building block fundamentals of surfing in a relaxed extremely fun way. Some of my other family members are expert surfers and they too found Toro to be the absolute best. For beginners, intermediate and experts Toro is truly a great teacher and a great person and I recommend him with the absolute highest ratings and most confidence!!! Dan Jurkowitz

A trip to Santa Teresa isn't complete without a surf lesson with Toro! We've now taken multiple lessons with Toro. He's an incredible instructor and perfect for surfers of all skill levels. He's always a highlight of our vacation!
