AfriCamps at Doolhof Wine Estate

The property was in the most peaceful location and we felt fully detached. It had a good sized decking and overall was a great escape. We also had lunch on at the Doolhof wine estate after our stay which was delicious!

I think there should be either 2 air cons or 2 fans instead of the aircon going across both rooms. Firstly, the room with the bunkbed didn’t feel the benefit and secondly, it reduced privacy between the two rooms.

We had a lovely, relaxing stay. We will be back.

Das Weingut liegt sehr schön und man kann dort an der Rezeption einen kleinen Snack einnehmen.

Leider hatten wir am Nachmittag dann Bauchschmerzen beziehungsweise Durchfall, was vielleicht auf die Wasserqualität vom stillen Wasser zurückzuführen war oder aufgrund der Speisen, die wir eingenommen haben. Zudem befand sich auf der Anlage eine Baustelle und netterweise hat man morgens um 7:30 Uhr mit dem Baggern angefangen zu arbeiten. Da wir ein Zelt in der Natur gebucht haben, war das natürlich ein no go.

Nothing

During our two travels in South Africa, we have stayed at five different Africamps, four of which were impeccable! The overall experience of Africamps at Doolhof Wine Estate was nothing but disappointment. At arrival, no quick run through of our tent and the Wine Estate. A simple, you have tent 7 and the key is in the lock. That way ↗️... At the tent, it was hard to open as one of the sliding doors was not on its rail, force was needed to open it. The tent wasn't clean. The tent and the surrounding area stunk like a sewer, leaving my wife feeling nauseous. After unloading our luggage, we immediately set off back to reception to complain about the stench. On our way down we discovered the cause, a water treatment plant about 50 meters from our accommodation. Tents 7 and 8 as well, are situated way too close to the plant. A manager (George) was called. We explained the issue and he 'fully' understood. As he said, if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction, the smell can be unbearable. Furthermore, it was harvest/production time, which only intensities the stench. As all tents were booked, there was nothing he could do. He apologised profusely and promised to make it up to us. Gullible as we are, we believed him. We hoped the situation might improve and went back to our tent. After eating our evening meal, my wife threw up twice due to the disgusting sewer stench. We had a long, horrible night, and in the morning my wife threw up another two times. As there was no solution, we decided to find our own by searching for alternative accomodation. When we checked out later that day, they didn't seem surprised - as apparently this is not the first time people have left prematurely - and did not even inquire as to the reason why. When I told them anyway, all they said was: we will tell George. We filed a complaint at Booking.com as it was clear to us that the accommodation is not what we were allowed to expect.
