USMotel is no-longer staffed by a human being, you are greeted by a yellowed paper sign taped on the office door telling you to check your text messages and/or e-mail for your room number and key-code, or to call a phone number for assistance- That DOES NOT work if you do not have cell phone coverage in the Buena Vista area. I had been in the back country for 3 days without cell phone service, and still did not have service when I arrived at Topaz Lodge. I drove around Buena Vista until I found a wi-fi signal, and NO, I did not receive any e-mail with my room number and key-code (Yes, I checked my spam folder). What are people without phone coverage supposed to do? Walk around asking strangers to borrow their phone so they can call the number on the office door? This is a pretty terrible idea for check-in, and I can't possibly be the only person who has experienced this problem. Since I couldn't access my room, I ended up cutting my vacation a day short and driving 250 miles back home. 70 miles along he way home, I got my phone signal back, and the text message with my key code finally showed up...still no e-mail a full day later. Room was also non-refundable, so I am out $100. They really could put a little more effort into the check-in process, it isn't too much to ask to have someone on-site at a motel. '
The idiotic, poorly thought out, and dumb check-in process that is 100% worthless if you don't have cell phone coverage in the area.

Building needs major renovation and updating. Toilet ran. Shower moldy and nowhere to put shampoo bottle etc. in shower. No interaction with office at all. Barely adequate. I renamed it Bates Motel in my head!
USNew bed, new sink, new toilet, new dresser, 50+ year old carpet with gross stains. We slept in our clothes on top of the comforter and showered with our shoes on.
