Room was as expected. Two beds and a bathroom. Basic cleanliness

Money to the value of one night's accommodation was taken from my account prior to the stay - although booking.com information said "No prepayment necessary". As I didn't know it was to be withdrawn and was expecting to pay at the property this caused my card to be declined when used. Money taken was not used for accommodation costs. Staff claimed it was a holding amount so on arrival we had to find full cost of accommodation plus damage deposit plus they still owed me the 'holding fee'. So at check in they had taken more than double the cost of 2 nights accommodation. Property did not use Booking.com messenger platform , instead emailing me. No office on site, at another hotel some distance away. No basin in bathroom, so handwashing, teeth cleaning occurs in the kitchenette - Yuck The holding fee was not returned to me for over a month. When I contacted the hotel saying there was a problem, apart from providing me with copies of the receipts they had given me (which of course I still had) they just said it isn't our fault, take it up with your bank. I contacted my bank who notified me that the hotel's bank had not received authorisation to release funds. When I informed the hotel that their cancelation had not gone through they effectively just said we have done all we can in tapping on our point of sale terminal, your loss is not our issue. While I now have my money back I had to wait a month, this greatly impacted the remainder of our holiday. This has been a very unpleasant experience, solely due to the complete lack of care provided by the hotel. I am in the process of lodging a complaint with Booking.com
