Bear Country Inn

The room was warm, dry & clean. There was a free pick-up from the station and a (very useful) quick tour of the town from the delightful Koral and a drop-off at the airport from the manager/owner John Sr. Koral's town and cultural tour was also brilliant (and an opportunity to see bears even without going on an official bear trip). The cleaning staff were lovely.

The hotel has the feel of a basic hostel - which would be fine - but without being set up to run that way. For example, there is a microwave in reception, but when we asked to use a bowl to heat up some food the cleaning staff said "John Sr doesn't like bowls being borrowed". The dining room would be fine for use as a common space to discuss the day's sightings but we were asked not to sit there on several occasions. Breakfast was disorganised. In our week-long stay we never saw fruit, and eggs were not always available making the breakfast often just cereal and toast. The use of disposable bowls, plates and cups is inexcusable in 2023 especially as John Sr proudly told one guest "we recycle nothing in Churchill, it all gets buried in the town dump". That's a reason to use proper crockery, surely, and wash it up. As other reviewers have commented, walls are paper-thin and rooms are not well furnished (ours had no desk or chair, just the bed). Churchill is remote and it must be incredibly difficult and expensive to kit out a hotel, and we were prepared to excuse a lot on that basis, but friends staying in other hotels (at similar prices) didn't have the same issues. Other hotels had boards with today's weather forecast, things to do in Churchill (for example, there was a town quiz which we missed because we didn't know it was on), and other helpful info. Again, an easy thing to do which would make a world of difference.

Friendly staff. Good organization

Bed was so comfy. The shower had great water pressure. The hotel offers a pick up and drop off at the airport too which was helpful. Location of the hotel is fantastic, lots of places to eat nearby.

The staff member I met was rude and grumpy. He alone made me feel unwelcome and like I was a hindrance.
