"Disappointed "

2.0

We came to town for a medical appt, check in was easy and quick. Our family of 3 soon realized there was only one small double bed for the 3 of us so we called for a cot. $20 later, the saggiest old cot was brought to the room and my 7 year old protested that he would not sleep the night on this. We were in Terrace for all of 6 hours for our appts and stayed maybe 1 hour tops in the room. It had an odor which irritated our noses and throats, until we left and gave me terrible allergies. The room was cold and you could feel air coming thru a silver plastic covered up air conditioning unit in the wall. The shower water wouldn't heat up so one of us had a lukewarm not so pleasant shower. The place wasn't dirty but you can tell it's an older motel, older sheets. They definitely have updated some stuff you can tell, our flooring was some nice laminate, bathroom seemed updated. There were so many unnecessary chairs in the room tho. We counted 6. A fold up plastic chair in one corner. An old hotel chair in another. A leather office chair in another corner, one at the deck and another at a small table in the corner. My son said it was to make up for the space where a bed should have been. We ended up deciding to leave by dinner time and head back to Prince Rupert for the night because we were all definitely allergic to something. The front desk sounded kind of irritated at what we told them and when we asked for our $20 cot fee back she rudely told us that she would have to go look at it and make sure of its condition first. We said forget it because our son had already been sitting on it and didn't want to argue. Would be an ok place for a one night stay or a single person/couple. The location is one of the best for sure and close to everything, a little more work could make it a decent and cozy place and an ideal spot to be. It feels like more of a truck stop motel. Definitely not the motel I remembered loving to stay at as a kid. Go to the Comfort Inn on the one side of town or the new Holiday Inn Express on the other side of town for a decent stay in Terrace.

"Welcome to Bear Country!"

8.0

Ah, the Bear Country! I have many a fond memory of this place. I used to stay here all the time with my grandparents. We were faithful patrons even way back when this place was still called the "Slumber Lodge." Bear Country was our go-to place when staying Terrace because the staff were (and are) friendly; the location is one that really can't be beat; and the in-house dining is actually pretty good! Random Memory #1: I remember, when I was maybe 8 or 10, staying at Bear Country with the grandparents -- I don't remember why we were in town or why we had my best friend with us. Anyway, we'd (my friend and I) decided to go to the pool (which now seems perpetually to be in repair). My grandfather accompanied us for safety reasons -- and a good thing, too! My friend tried to get too "slick" by heading out into the "deep end" of the pool and he ended up almost drowning. He probably would have if my grandfather hadn't been fast-thinking. That's a strange memory to bring up in relation to Bear Country, sure, but it sticks out. Now, the location: As I said, it is central -- you are right in the heart of downtown Terrace. Pizza Hut is right across the street, as is Northern Savings -- the "major" banking institution in the region. The mall is virtually right across the street; the cinema is right next door; and various fast food eateries are but a five-minute walk away (KFC/Taco Bell, McDonald's, Tim Hortons). . .it's a great spot and a safe part of town. As for the hotel itself, it has been renovated since my last stay (around 2011), and that's a good thing because it was starting to look a little tired back then. The rooms, while simple, have been modernized. The bed was comfortable and clean. Basically, the hotel serves its purpose: it is a functional place to stay at a decent price. Random Memory #2: My grandparents and I were sitting in the in-house restaurant for breakfast back when I was a teenager. As part of my meal, I ordered a "rasher of bacon" on the side, which the menu described as a side order of 4 strips. What comes my way? A MASSIVE plate full of bacon -- 24 strips, I believe. When we asked what the heck was going on, the server said that's what I ordered, but then we pointed out what the menu said. Thankfully, we were not charged for that! All in all, Bear Country Inn is a decent place to stay. The prices have gone up a bit since my last stay, but that's kind of to be expected. It was nice to stay here again, even if it was mostly nostalgic! PS: I don't like the new generic looking signage atop the hotel. . .looks like any other "corporate" design now.

"Great Value/ Clean"

10.0

The rooms were basic, but clean and affordable. The motel is located right in the middle of town and easy to drop off the car and walk to shops and restaurants. Staff at the counter were professional and check in was easy. Rate was $120/night which was $20 less than Days Inn or Best Western.

"need a breakfast voucher!"

6.0

there is breakfast in the restaurant attached but not included in the room, The rooms are average and the walls are thin so hopefully you are not put into a room where people are hanging out in their room with guests. Also if you can try to get a main floor room, as carrying the bags up and down the stairs is not very convenient. Close to Tim Hortons, Safeway and more

"a little disappointed in the cleanliness of bed linen"

6.0

the room was updated with nice enough bedding, (king bed was comfortable) I didn't notice until the next morning (husband's side of bed) had a big brown stain on the bed cover. It was very disappointing - so everything I've read about the bed covers in hotels are true. I spoke with front counter staff to advise them that housekeeping needed to be more careful. *ugh*

"Sloppy House Cleaning"

4.0

Stayed here one night which was enough. The main room had been updated with new furniture but the wall was still full of holes from the replaced headboard and lamp fixtures. Also the the bathroom is badly in need of refreshing. I hopped into the shower and was part way through when I noticed dark black head hair all over the back wall of the shower....disgusting. !! There are several new hotels under construction in Terrace, so in the near future we will have some better choices.

"Medical"

2.0

The start of our trip was awful as we're here for medical we got to the hotel at about 10 we come to check in and the guy ignores us for 15 minutes then finally he addresses my mom but doesn't say hello or welcome he says very rudely "we check in at 1" we were a little upset because my mom was very sore and tired "he gets back on the phone looks at my mother and says nothing I can do ..although he let us put our two little bags in the back we wandered terrace untill 5 two one we get back no one greets us we stand there forever before another rude lady tells us we won't get in till three because heck outs at that time I was so upset!! "My mom looked distract and the girl throws her hands in the air and says "we can do anything!" I demanded the manager after a few words about how rude they are and that I just saw a room cleaned and emptied when we got here at 10 ..she rolled her eyes muttered something and walked away so long story short we never got in..we had to go and wander again so we rated at timhortons untill 3 when we got back another long wait because they were having a conversation that was funny I guess they quickly rolled their eyes and served us..only giving us a room with one bed and trying to sell us a cot I said I'd rather sleep in the floor then pay $25 a day..she then said risky I guess I can give you two beds..when we got to the room it smelled so bad the cleaner was so overwhelming my eyes were burning we had no hand towels and our door knob kept locking us in and you had to slam the door for it to close right..today we are leaving and now they tell us checkouts at 12 instead of 3 and then then phone us at 11 asking if we are leaving so we told them they just told us 12 and the same rude girl said well idk who told you that!! And hung up the only pleasant people were the housekeepers in this place I will never stay here if I had too I'll sleep in my car never in my life had I ever had to deal with this

"Good for a Hunting/fishing group but NOT families"

6.0

Stayed here for two nights (snow storm forced second night). Actually, the reason I give them 3 stars instead of 2 is because they WERE accommodating to the stranded guests. This is a dated motel (but in a good downtown location) wherein I found that you do not only hear the guests on either side... you also hear the guests on your backwall! My first impression came when I walked up the stairs and found two male guests smoking some pot beside a puddle of vomit. They just snickered as I stepped over it - but as noted in headline, great place for a bunch of guys on a hunting or fishing drunk-up but I would not bring any family. As well, the room I had had a suite -door in it (with desk pulled to keep it from being opened buy a neighbour). This door also served to carry a draft into the room every time the neighbour opened their front door. Note: NO breakfast is included with a stay, but it is attached to a mediocre restaurant (see my restaurant review).

"Shelter from the Storm"

10.0

I have stayed at Bear Country monthly, for work, have been doing that for 15 months now, will continue. this week was exceptional, a large and brutal winter storm dropped 4 feet of snow on Terrace in 2 days, I checked out Friday morning, went to the airport, only to find that all flights out were cancelled, I had to hitchhike back from the airport, to Terrace, as the cabs were not running. I got back to Bear country inn with no reservation, and waited in line to check back in. Things were looking grim, as most guests did not check out because of the storm. Bear Country staff got me a room even as they said over the phone to callers that there was no room at the inn. Bear Country staff provided me with a room, when I needed if most, that counts huge in my book. Not only that, but as the restaurant closed early, ( as did most of the restaurants nearby) Bear Country staff provided sandwiches for guests that were hungry. Thank you Bear Country Staff.
