The Marine Hotel

We had a friendly welcome and help carrying bags upstairs. The room was spacious and comfortable with a nice view over the harbour. The cooking smells on the stairs did not get to the room. Breakfast was fine (not gourmet). Great location for walking into town or onto the cliffs.

This is what it is. Don't expect luxury and you will be fine.

The hotel’s location is convenient for visiting Dunnottar Castle and exploring Stonehaven, but the lack of warmth, cleanliness issues, maintenance problems, and generally unwelcoming atmosphere meant that our stay fell well below expectations.

I recently stayed at the Marine Hotel in Stonehaven and unfortunately the experience was disappointing. The room was quite small and could have benefited from a more thorough clean. In addition, several tiles in the bathroom were broken, which gave the room a tired and poorly maintained appearance. We arrived at around 10am hoping to leave our bags before walking to Dunnottar Castle. The hotel reception is located at the bar area of the restaurant on the first floor. On arrival, the staff member appeared tired, having just finished serving breakfast. We left our bags and did not feel comfortable. When we returned at 2pm to check in, the atmosphere felt much the same. There were two staff members busy serving lunch and, on both occasions, it felt as though we had arrived at an inconvenient time rather than being welcomed as guests. The biggest issue was the lack of heating. The weather was cold and rainy during our stay, with overnight temperatures around 11°C. There was no heating in the room, so I went to reception to ask whether it could be turned on. I was told that the hotel uses central heating and that the receptionist would need to ask the manager whether he was willing to switch it on. Unfortunately, no heating was provided overnight. To make matters worse, the duvet was very thin and offered little warmth. We ended up using the towels as extra covers just to stay comfortable through the night. As a result, we did not get a good night sleep. Breakfast is served only between 9-10am, therefore we could not get any breakfast as our train was at 9am.

The location is simply beautiful. The front bar is pleasant with nice people. The dinner menu was good, as was the breakfast. The view from my room was delightful. The appointments and decor are tasteful and stylish. The staff here are so helpful and lovely that it really made the stay all the more special. I especially appreciated the giant buff Scotsman who personally served us breakfast. I was charmed. I'll never forget him!

The staircases are steep and full-on, due to the age of the property of course, but this was not an issue, because the staff kindly carried all our luggage up and down the stairs without making it seem like a chore.
