Hotel Thireas

Hotel Thireas was wonderful. These were the things I most enjoyed: (1) The location - within two minutes walk to the sunset of Santorini viewing area just next to the Metropolitan Church of Ypapanti Thira. Beautiful sunset views every night. (2) The breakfast - each morning you could specify whether you would like your breakfast in the room, on the balcony or in the common patio. It was wholesome and substantial with lots of food options - fruit salad, yoghurt, pancakes, boiled eggs and salad with an assortment of breads. Tea or coffee also with fresh juice. (3) The rooms - these were aligned in the cave with minimal decoration to appreciate the simple architecture and the surroundings. (4) The French bathroom products - the shampoo, conditioner and body wash by Pascal Morabito. (5) The friendly staff - General Manager, John was responsive and helpful and staff coordinator, Theo carried our bags and brought us breakfast. The cleaners also came daily which was appreciated. (6) The two bedroom and two-bathroom option was most attractive for us. (7) Walking distance - close to the shops and Fira main square.

Things that we missed or could be improved upon: (1) A window - staying in Santorini, everyone wants to see the view. While we did have a balcony and foyer to see the ocean, this required us to leave the privacy of our room. Otherwise, we could not see any view due to the frosted glass door. It would also feel quite claustrophobic for some. It made for good sound-proofing from outside, though noise inside echoed. (2) Fresh air - The lack of fresh air was also missed as the humidifier and air-conditioners were noisy and didn't help much to circulate the air. The vents in the bathroom were also dusty and needing to be cleaned to help with extraction, noting the shower steam would fog up the whole room. (3) The pool - it wasn't heated and was smaller than the photos online. (4) Lack of communication - we stayed during the period of quake tremors where everyone began to evacuate the island. No messages were sent to us about the tremors, despite our beds shaking multiple times during the evening. This was likely so as to not worry the guests but it was everywhere in the media and news. Some communication would have been better than none - including where to buy ferry tickets if guests did want to leave, where is the evacuation point or what do we do if there is an earthquake or volcano eruption.

The view from the room was breathtaking, and the hotel staff were absolutely wonderful. It was my birthday, and they surprised me with something special, making the stay even more memorable :)

The highlight of the hotel and it's rooms has to be its exceptional view of the the sea and the caldera and of course, the most amazing host I have ever met anywhere in the world, Ms Vanessa. She was not only very polite but extremely helpful in making our stay super delightful and comfortable. She provided tour suggestions and also gave recommendations to avoid inconvenience due to off season. The breakfast was decent and good in quantity. The room itself was cozy, a little small but that's the norm. The balcony was beautiful and provided a good vantage point for Fira.

The washroom was very small and one of the ceiling was slanting which was an inconvenience due to our tall heights. The breakfast could have more variety and some hot options, considering the cold weather. When we booked the hotel, hot water tub was one of the highlights which made us choose this property and it should have been mentioned that it does not operate in winters.
