Kyoto City Gardens Hotel

Good location, walking distance from shops, train and main Kyoto station. Very friendly staff.

Very thin walls, we had seen reviews that had said similar and you can really hear a lot through them. The room was quite tight, good for a couple but for friends it was a bit cramped. Rooms only get cleaned once within a 4 day stay which to us seemed very silly when everywhere else is everyday at least we got new towels though.

Easy to check in/check out, good size room for our group ( 3 adults 1 kid in 3 beds). 15 mins walking to Kyoto Station is a bonus as we cannot bring large suitcases on the bus. Also 10mins walk to JR Tofukuji for easy transport to Fushimi Inari and Nara. A few buses can take you to Kiyomizu Temple and Gion district. Vending machine near reception with free tea/coffee/ onion soup City tax 220Y/person/night, outdoor spa 500Y/person (need to book with reception) We booked the outdoor spa on Friday night and got it all for ourselves. It's on level 6 but no view for privacy reason. Nothing fancy but it was relaxing after a day full of walking.

Our room was in front of the elevator so it was noisy with people moving in/out. People leave rubbish bags and used towels outside of their rooms for cleaning and collection, look messy and unclean in the morning.

It's an okay price for the facilities and room provided! There's a bus stop right outside with buses to places like Yasaka Pagoda and Sannenzaka which is neat if you want to go early to snap some awesome photos! The JR Tofukuji station is an 11 minute walk away across a river bridge which makes for a nice morning stroll too.

The nearest subway station (Kujo) is about a 10min walk away, so not exactly the most convenient. But the aforementioned bus stop is great. Also would wish if room cleaning was done every day like other hotels, but i guess it helps with sustainability that they only help with changing the towels and clearing your trash

There is a microwave in the lobby, which is great for heating bentos for breakfast when we have to leave super early.

The room feels like it wasn't cleaned when we checked in. The sanitary bin inside the bathroom was not empty. There was a sanitary pad inside the bin from the previous guest, and the cleaners did not empty it. There was this weird dark patch on the blanket covers, which makes me think that they did not give us new sheets after the previous guest.... The actual room size is ok, but they have a whole row of table along one side of the whole wall which takes up so much space, so we dont have space to put out our luggage

We went during the peak autumn leaf viewing and were able to book this hotel at a very reasonable price. The rooftop bath was nice, but more flexible times would have been better.There was a nice area in the foyer where you could eat what you'd bought outside.

The ads said it was a 4 star hotel, which it wasn't. So if we knew it was 2-3 stars, then our expectations would have been different.

There's a laundromat that you can use for a small charge, and free coffee and tea are available for guests in the lobby. The location is close to the Kujo station, and bus stops for the city circle line are just around the corner.

Just be sure to take the bus in the right direction, or you'll be on a half-hour ride just to get to Kyoto station.

Check out is 11am which is later than most other hotels in Japan. Staff were friendly when you seen them.

This is not a 4 star hotel. I’m currently on a multi city trip in Japan and this hotel was the most uncomfortable I’ve stayed in despite all the hotels before being a lower star rating. When I checked out and moved on to my next 3 star I felt a relief at how comfortable I now felt. I’d genuinely say this was a 2 star hotel. The hotel didn’t offer things like luggage delivery and when I asked for an extra pillow the answer was no with no explanation why. The bed is rock hard. The room has no mirror or lamp and the heating unit makes noises constantly (didn’t get a full night sleep the full time I was there as it woke me up around every 15 mins). The walls are thin and you can hear everything in the hallway which is frustrating as the hotel is used by groups a lot so you hear everyone run between rooms. The room is also either freezing or boiling, there is no in between. Booked a 4 star for my time in Kyoto as a treat to myself for my time exploring Japan and was left extremely let down. It’s not that it’s awful it’s just when you advertise a hotel as a 4 star you get a shock on arrival when things are like this. If this was a 2 star with a 2 star price I’d be fine but it’s not.
