Kaponga Hotel

A very comfortable, ultra-clean and well maintained small hotel above a restaurant / bar. Small hotels are hard to find outside of larger towns and cities in NZ, and this one met all my needs. Recommended for bicycle touring! Super helpful staff.

Simple room with shared facilities above a pub, no frills but exactly what I wanted. The staff were very friendly showing me around. There is a locked carpark with access so no need to go through the pub and very secure. Everything was neat and tidy and had all that I needed. The lounge was a great space to relax with windows all around and sunlight in the morning. Kitchen - Jug, microwave and toaster, with plenty of room in the fridge. The area is pretty barren, but nearby is Holland gardens which is a must go. Beautiful for a walk around, with picnic areas, free bbq and even a playground. 15min from Dawson falls which is also a must see, absolutely stunning.

The kitchen was missing a chopping board and scrubbing brush would have been nice too. And be warned the walls are thin - I could hear snoring from the room next to me. Some machinery noise outside during the night which didn’t keep me up but could be annoying.

Unique stay, almost felt like we were in a flatting situation short term. I like the single rooms, almost never see that, my mother and I were able to have separate rooms during our road trip and the parking was secure. The limited number of rooms meant we also never saw anyone and almost felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Area was easy access to all the cities/towns in the area and the mountain, and supermarkets were <20 minutes drive away.

The shower in the middle regularly overflowed and flooded. We only discovered there was another bathroom on the last day of our three day stay as it had been locked the whole time. Need to be careful about carrying around your keys with you, as the room I was in was permanently locked (so you risked locking yourself out).

Beautiful location. Enjoyed the opportunity to walk around a very small, run-down country down. It has lots of character. The rooms were clean and the bed was comfortable.

I would have liked a bed-side lamp - there was only the overhead light. The access through the bar and back-room was shaby, but as this is a small country pub I did not mind too much. However, I think it would be worthwhile to clean and tidy up that room.

The bedroom, the bathroom all the upper floor, but also the bar restaurant downstairs. Full of very nice old ladies around noon time and farmers in the evening. Nice countryside atmosphere. But also the beer and the hamburger 😋 As well as the ghost 👻 village.

The fact that the room wasn't ready at 1:00 PM (on Booking.com it was mentioned: room ready at noontime. Never mind noting really tragic 😉👍🏻

The view from fire exit balcony to the volcano Taranaki was amazing.

We checked in late and were let into the room via the bar. They forgot to tell us how to open the gates. In the morning it was a problem - nobody was there to let us out, no response to the message and call. Finally we climbed the fence to get out.
