Hotel La Rana de Arenal

This hotel is a bird paradise. The eccentric owner feeds them all day long, right beside the patio tables. He even offered to drive me into town when I had to visit the bank! My stay was wonderful and relaxing, enjoying the birds and gorgeous grounds. I definitely plan to return.

Without access to a car, staying here is not practical, unfortunately, as it is about an hour from the town of La Fortuna, with no shuttle or bus access that I could find.

The views from the room were just incredible! The staff welcomed us nicely and was flexible with the checkin times. It was quiet and we could see a lot of beautiful birds in addition to the lake. The room was comfortable.

You can’t fully close windows so you hear all the animals during the night but that was part of the experience!

Nice little room. Bed was comfortable. Nice shower. Great parking for the bikes as the property is down a steep private drive and so not visible from the road. Nice chairs outside of the room with a fantastic view to the lake. Great location away from it all.

It would have been nice to have facilities to make tea or coffee during the day. The restaurant is good and the food is nice but it’s overpriced. Breakfast was great but it too is very over priced. There’s nothing around it (which is great) so you don’t have much choice but to eat there.

Incredible place to stay to see the birds at breakfast. Good restaurant. Good rooms. Great views. Plenty of parking. We stayed two extra days. As the owner says, why pay for the national parks when you can see more bird life here in one hour at breakfast - we had good weather when we stayed - it might not be the same if it rains

We recommend this place to everybody we meet ,- just beware breakfast is an extra and it is better to pay in cash to avoid a substantial surcharge on card pay

Wonderful breakfast! And such courteous staff! After the first day, they had stuff ready for us when we came up for breakfast.

Rooms aren’t very private. Other guests were not courteous and would be up late and quite noisy. More concerning was that they were smoking pot, last thing at night and first thing in the morning, and the smoke would come into our room. I know the owners and management can’t control guests’ behavior, but they can be aware of it. And can ask it to be curtailed.

Location is convenient for my needs
