If John Cleese had stayed at this establishment with these hosts, they (rather than Donald Sinclair, the eccentric, inhospitable, and boorishly impolite hotel owner) would have been the inspiration for Basil Forte and Fawlty Towers would have been located in Horton-in-Ribblesdale rather than Torquay! The premises is in dire need of a complete overall. The hosts are selling the property, and while we do not know why, nor the decisions they are having to make), it is as if they have already ‘checked out’. Never have I felt as a guest, I was an inconvenience, a target of passive aggression, treated with utter contempt. The hosts demonstrate such low levels of trust, customer service and over the top control issues, demonstrated by so many factors; most amusingly the numerous aggressively (Block Capitals) written notes which proliferate every wall. They make few accommodations that the customers are mainly walkers. The social media reviews reflect this. I would recommend you only enter this establishment with a sense of wonder, a likeness for 1970’s chintz, low expectation, and minimum freedoms. However, I guarantee you will have a memorable and traumatic experience!!!

Good location No shower or cooked breakfast

Available when everywhere else in the village was full. Friendly welcome and service, cosy bar with open fire. Good evening meal. Plenty of very hot water for the bath.

Very cold other than in the bar. Bedsprings were noisy every time I turned over. Breakfast was rudimentary by current standards.

Shower didn't work, bedding and bed were in poor condition. Place felt unclean and unhygienic... Place could do with a refurbishment.
