Libertalia Hotel

Really helpful, friendly staff, especially the owner. Great bungalow, right opposite the beach with seating to look at glorious view. Good value, excellent food, home cooked and delicious. Half way from airport to town. Owners live on site- the place has a super friendly, family feel, and has a good local reputation.

Frustratingly, the beach is not safe to swim, due to spiked anemone... this is true of many beaches around the island. the pool is nice, cleaned daily and with a great view, but the hotel lacks a safe beach. Pity, its a lovely wide beach belonging to the hotel.

Everything's okay

The unfailing friendliness and helpfulness of the staff at all times and in all respects. The welcome drink - thoughtful. The well-designed and comfortable bungalows. The situation directly on the seashore, the calm and peaceful atmosphere compared with the town of Ambodifotatra, though the town is still in easy reach. The ambiance in the communal areas.

According to booking.com it is possible to pay by credit card. What booking.com needs to add is that the hotel makes a surcharge of 4% for such payments. This not only very high, it is also not in accord with modern practice. Guests also need to be aware that the hotel's card machine may reject cards that can be used without any problems elsewhere. Wifi is only available in the communal areas. To have access in the bungalows an extra receiver must be paid for. It's cheaper to buy a Madagascan SIM card and buy access through that. This can also be used during the frequent power cuts, which knock out the hotel's wifi (certainly not the hotel's fault, of course). The cuisine is disappointing - what is on offer, though well prepared, is limited, not very imaginative and rather overpriced. An evening trip into town will get you a greater choice at a better price. The whale-watching trip, while highly successful in permitting close encounters with these beautiful animals, carried a certain risk, especially when the bootsman took the cockleshell of a boot out of the lee of the island into the open sea in pursuit of whales.

Libertaria is a great value for money - wonderful facilities with lots of different areas to relax. All bungalows have their own little "deck", we had the basic one which was fine but I'd recommend the superior as they have better doors, are a bit neater and have a hammock overlooking the ocean. The staff are fantastic, Aurelie is a queen and her and the team will help you figure out anything you want help with! Food is delicious and lots of drink options too. Truly a paradise, I can only recommend a stay.

More seating by the pool/dock would be nice!

What a perfect little beach retreat! Libertalia had everything we needed: comfortable bed, ocean views, terrific Malagasy food, gracious staff, and whale watching excursions leaving straight from their pier. Loved our stay!
