"Not up to the Marriott Standards, Needs a Refresh"

I am surprised that the Marriott corporation has let this hotel get so shabby. It does not feel like the normal Marriott experience. It clearly needs a refresh. The room is clean in terms of sheets, towels, etc. But the sofa was stained, the carpet is old, the air conditioning vents were dusty and it had that third-rate hotel "smell" kind of sour with a huge smattering of sprinkled carpet deodorizer. That said, it is a convenient location and the shuttle drivers were WONDERFUL.

"Adequate"

Good location a short distance from the terminal building, with a convenient free shuttle to and from the terminal. Bed was comfortable enough. Good-sized room too.

The dining options seemed a bit restrictive; ideally an airport hotel should have more availability/flexibility given guests arriving at all hours. The listing says 4 restaurants onsite, but some of these are for elite members only. I checked in just before 10pm, and so missed the room service cutoff (10pm). Only one restaurant was available, and even that was closing at 22:45 I think.

Very close to the airport good shuttle to the airport friendly staff

Food in restaurant was average, service at the restaurant was average, toilet became clogged, no body soap lotion in the dispenser, been in cleaner hotels for sure

"Terrible reception"

had an absolutely terrible experience at the Newark Airport Marriott. I arrived around 2 AM after working a 30-hour flight, completely exhausted, along with my team. From the very beginning, the service was already disappointing. The first thing I said to the receptionist was, โ€œGood morning, Iโ€™m very tired. Iโ€™ve been on a flight for 30 hours.โ€ Instead of any empathy or basic courtesy, she coldly replied that the system was down. Her tone was unwelcoming, dismissive, and she clearly seemed uninterested in helping or even speaking to guests. We were told to wait due to the system issue, which we did patiently for about 15 minutes, despite being extremely exhausted. Once the system came back, the receptionist who was helping me suddenly disappeared and went on a break without finishing my check-in or saying anything. Meanwhile, another receptionist next to herโ€”Mauriceโ€”continued checking in guests who had arrived after me, completely ignoring the fact that I had been waiting longer. At that point, my colleague, the captain traveling with me, went to the side to look for the receptionist and politely said, โ€œHello, lady.โ€ Maurice immediately responded in a very sarcastic and condescending tone, saying, โ€œCan I help you, sir?โ€โ€”in a way that felt more mocking than helpful. My colleague explained that the receptionist who had been assisting us had suddenly disappeared and that we just wanted to go to our rooms after a very long flight. Maurice replied dismissively that she had gone on her break. I then asked why she would go on break right when the system had just come back and guests were waiting. He responded, again very rudely, that she went on break โ€œbecause itโ€™s her break,โ€ and that she would return whenever her break was finished, and that we would be attended โ€œwhen the time permits.โ€ I explained that this was not fair, as I had been waiting there for quite a long time already. Instead of showing any understanding or trying to help, he repeatedly said โ€œI understand, madam. I understand. I understand. I understand,โ€ in a loud, mechanical, and clearly sarcastic tone, showing zero empathy. As someone who works in hospitality myself, I recognize this kind of scripted responseโ€”and this was the complete opposite of genuine service. My colleagues were also shocked by how rude and dismissive he was. The entire interaction felt disrespectful and completely unprofessional. This is completely unacceptable, especially as a Platinum member. After such a long and exhausting flight, this is the last thing anyone should have to deal with. To make matters worse, when I finally got to my room, it smelled strongly of cigarettes, which made the experience even worse. I will absolutely be reporting this to my company and recommending that we never book this hotel again. If youโ€™re arriving late and exhausted, do yourself a favor and avoid this place. The staff is rude, disorganized, and clearly does not care about their guests.
