Hotel Flatey

First, Flatey Island is amazing, and I am super happy I chose to spend a night there. There is only one hotel on this small island. It's a beautiful, historical two building property. The adjoining restaurant is phenomenal, and the breakfast provided was the best I had in Iceland. Large numbers of Puffins are viewable at close range just a five minute walk up the road.

Well, I don't love sharing bathrooms, but that's the only choice in this, the only hotel on the island. My single room was exceedingly small, but I was just happy to have a nice, clean place to stay in such a unique place. The view from my room was amazing -- but you had to basically lie on the floor to see out the window! Still, definitely go to Flatey Island and stay there.

The hotel is in a very charming old building with an amazing restaurant and very friendly staff. Nice outdoor area. The remote location is exceptional (and basically what explains the price).

We were located in a family room in the by-house where there are no darkening curtains in our room, but only very light transparent ones. The room remained very light all night, disrupting our sleep. Considering the high costs for one night (and the fact that all other hotels in Iceland have this), I do not understand that this basic facility is missing and would never book this room again for that reason. The house itself is quite old and creaks (bring earplugs!), beds basic and shared bathroom very simple (but no reserve stack of toilet paper). All in all this made it feel like a very overpiced hostel, although we have stayed in hostels that are much better.

Flatey is absolutely charming and this hotel is perfect for the atmosphere of the location. Great summer concert series where locals and tourists alike share in the fun. Excellent food and one of the best cocktails I’ve had in Iceland.

It’s quite expensive for a hotel with shared bathrooms but it’s the only option
