Howler Monkey Hotel

Cabuya is like a paradise. I love the quite their...you are souronded by lots of jungle. The hotel is locates really next to the beach so it's really nice and it located in a good location in cabuya. The hotel is really quite...it's a different vibe of Costa Rica with I really love. You are experience Costa Rica and pur vida:)

Amazing location right next to the beach with hammocks. Really friendly and welcoming. The cabins were a great size with fans to keep cool and you feel really close to nature. We even saw a troop of monkeys swing over us while in the pool!

The place is right on the beach, very quiet and chill, a lot of privacy and space. The pool is nice.

Cooking facilities are not the best. Also, there are a lot of bugs in the room. A mosquito net could have made things easier.

Beautiful location, if you love nature, calm and the sounds of the jungle and the sea, then this is certainly your place to be! The pool is amazing, really clean and big. The cabins have everything you need, well equipped kitchen, bathroom with hot water and good water pressure. You don’t need airco, the sea breeze does it for ya! From the chairs at the beach you can enjoy the nightfall and spot some batts. Amazing sunrises over the sea. The owner, Jim, is very knowledgeable about nature and the animals around and very accessible. He will help you with any needs, you just gotta ask. He has a direct approach which we really appreciated. We only wished we’d found this place earlier!

Jim was so lovely and helpful our entire stay, ensuring we were as comfortable as possible. Helped us do some laundry, ensured we had everything we needed to cook lots of lovely meals during our stay. A few really nice places to eat and grab a coffee near by, reasonably priced however cooking facilities so good we only did this a couple times. What you get for the price is amazing, would recommend for a 2-3 night stay. We absolutely loved being able to use two bikes free of charge, thank you so much Jim

Everything with the property was absolutely perfect, only thing to note is public transport there can be a tad limited and unreliable. When it did work was cheap and super practical however! No problem at all if happy to take a taxi or renting a car/ moped/ buggy!

The location was OK I guess.

I try not to write reviews to warn people away from a place, but the summary of this review is: do not stay here unless you have no other choice due to availability or budget. The owner does not care about basic hygiene or repairs. If you do stay here, go to the beach and consider this as a bed for rent, nothing more. Really the only upside is the location. Now, for the longer review: Last minute it turned out that our tent had sprung a leak and we had to find something else. Friends of ours had booked at howler monkey, it was pretty cheap so we booked without thinking. We were welcomed by the owner, who barely looked up from his YT videos, but eventually seemed to realize we needed a key and walked us to our cottage, only after paying a slightly inflated price in cash (he seems to think credit card companies charge 9%). It was small, but to be fair, in that sense it was value for money. The small space was used smartly with a tiny cooking stove, shower, toilet and a rickety stairs up to the bedroom. The bedroom was actually sort of okay. However, our fan only worked at maximum (noisy) power and was caked with dust which not even the fan was able to blow off (luckily I guess). The cabin was littered with dead insects. We wanted to put down our toothbrushes but every surface was sticky, dusty, and had residue on it which had obviously been there a while. When walking down the stairs (which had nails sticking out), I bumped into toilet paper, which was used to plug holes in the insect netting. In the morning when I could not find a spot to put down some other utensils, discovered an electricity box with burned wiring, and found an ant trail toward the dead insects, we figured we'd chalk the second night up to a loss and book somewhere else. We tried to find him in the morning but he was nowhere to be found. Left a message, never got a response.

Of all the hotels we stayed in during our month exploring Costa Rica this one is the most memorable. While lounging in the pool after dark we were treated to an amazing light show by the distant lightening storm on the horizon out over the sea and the very active fireflies circling the trees above us. This is actually a great place for wildlife lovers because animals are attracted to the fruit trees on the property, many of which were planted by the owner, Jim. Jim (a fellow Irishman) is what makes this place unique. He kept us entertained with stories of his various experiences from his many years living in Costa Rica. He says he’ll write a book about them some day and I for one look forward to reading it!

A quiet location right by the ocean and inside the jungle. Within reach of everything ( Montezume, Santa Teresa etc.). Supermarkets,a bakery , and restaurants nearby. There is a kitchen for each bungalow if you wish to make meals. We liked the place and liked our host ( a native English speaker) ,and enjoyed talking to him. A great experience. We highly recommend this place!
