"Magical stay in the tranquil town of Cabuya:)"

10.0

As soon as we arrived at Howler Monkey Hotel Jim welcomed us and upgraded our room free of charge. We had a bedroom with 4 beds, a separate kitchen and bathroom all to ourselves. The water pressure and temperature in the shower was great. Jim was also very flexible with our checkout time. Throughout our stay Jim was super helpful - giving us recommendations for where to eat, nice activities, etc. He was also very happy to let us use his bikes, kayak, books, and washing machine, all free of charge! The space is rustic but very cute and clean - exactly what we were looking for. There is a nice pool and direct beach access (the beach is rocky, but still very nice vibes with Adirondack chairs to relax in). Contrary to a recent review by guests who stayed in the same room that we did, we did not see ANY bugs or roaches. Of course, in Cabuya you are in the great outdoors, so wear bug spray, but the bugs were not worse than anywhere else on our trip. Actually, the mosquitos were much less bothersome here than even the nearby Mazunte. We met Jim’s dogs, and they were very sweet and friendly! We had no problem with them at all. Jim even helped us retrieve a shirt that we accidentally left behind. The vibe of this hotel is definitely camp-y, but in the best way. Would 100% stay again!

"Liked it , would come back with pleasure"

Nice and quiet place to stay away from the crowd, real Pura Vida for the first time, don't forget your own supply if you are preparing food .You have fridge , little swimming pool, propane stove... 4 nice dogs, exceptional view on the beach( it's waterfront property). You can hear howler monkeys at night probably 20 meters away from your cabin. We had a car so with gps was very easy to get to( no need for 4x4 at all), newly ( same day we came) opened restaurant on the corner , 50 m away with good food, not expensive, corner store 5 min away, Italian pizza...

It's not that I didn't like it. Squeaky stairs/ floor 🤣 so everyone knows that you're going to the washroom at night, it works also other way around you can hear if someone is on the way to youšŸ™‚

"Hidden paradise"

10.0

The place is super cozy, right at the beach, you can hear the ocean from your room and see the sunset walking 100 ft. There are monkeys, birds and nature. Close to the park, right next to Cabuya beach access for boats, couple of nice restaurants close by

The place is not luxurious, if you are planning on something fancy this is not the place, for me as a DiveMaster was perfect. There was a pretty big toad that scared me when I went to the restroom at night, all good though.

I loved the view and the stillness. No cars waking me up. We were so close to the nature instead. If you would woke up by something it would be animals.

It was a bit to far out from the ā€œcityā€, about 15 minutes car ride. But if you enjoy the stillness and retreat feeling, is it a perfect spot. There is also busses three times per day driving in to Montezuma.

"Peaceful stay with the Howler Monkeys in serene Cabuya."

The cabinas are comfy and cool at night. The location is spectacular. The place is not fancy but the natural setting is rare in this busy season in CR. Not a Marriott thank heavens.

Our host Jim was a wealth of information regarding the flora and fauna and his efforts to protect the local environment.

There was really nothing we didn't like or expect.

"Terrible experience"

1.0

Good location, just in front of the beach

Our experience has been an absolute NIGHTMARE. In reality, the hostel doesn't look like the pictures on Booking; it is in a state of complete degradation, dirty, and unsafe (the wood of the cabins has been ā€œfixedā€ with some tape) . We found dead bugs inside the sheets, too many ants and mosquitoes inside the cabins and an overall dirtiness of a place that has not been cleaned for a long time. I have been sleeping in the jungle my entire trip in Costa Rica; and no place I have been to was as poorly preserved as this one. In addition to this terrible experience in an hotel that has the the price of a 4 stars hotel, we found a bad management. The owner of the place showed no empathy or customer care, which is the minimum when running a hotel. I saw many reviews here on Booking where Jim (the owner) was replying to criticism in a very aggressive way; I would recommend to take action and do something instead of being aggressive. I will not stay at this hotel ever again!
