"Comfy old hotel"

10.0

Near old 1882 Hotel in silver City. Downtown by the little toad Creek brewery and distillery and several galleries. Great old atmosphere. No elevator but decent stairs. A continental breakfast upstairs in the sitting area very pleasant.

"Palace Hotel - Surprise, surprise, surprise in Silver City"

4.0

With glowing reviews we chose to stay here at the Palace. First off upon arrival there was nobody at the desk. Some others had opened the front door to let me in. I waited in a dark lobby for what seemed forever, actually about 40 minutes or more. I called my wife and said nobody was here and she said to call the phone numbers she sent me. I called and the desk phone rang and rang, then trying the other number I got an automated message. Apparently the second number was a third party reservation service which was of no help. Then Gustavo appeared from upstairs, he apologized profusely and i asked whether there was an elevator to reach the rooms upstairs. He said no elevator but that our room was at ground level. The suite was very large, formerly a store on the corner of the block. It had been renovated in a somewhat non professional manner yet the size was remarkable. Gustavo offered to help me unload my luggage as I could only find a spot on a side street. Well we brought in the luggage and I still was amazed by the space. Later that evening after dinner out, we returned to the hotel. Again the parking was on the street and I had to park almost 4 blocks away. In the room the first thing we noticed was a lack of a central heating system. We used the bathroom heater on full and brought a space heater out to the main room to attempt to warm this large space up. I will interject here that there were no instructions on what to do or how to heat this space. Apparently there was a window AC unit that may have had heating capabilities but we never did find out until we left. Continental Breakfast - is nomenclature for coffee and bread and a little cereal. We found that we had to leave our room, go two doors down and then upstairs for a sparse breakfast. After a cup of coffee we left for Denny's to have a real breakfast. Bottom line this was a mostly poorly constructed renovated store, into an enormous space. Little in terms of adequate outlets and heating options. A thorough explanation would have gone a long ways to at least being comfortable temperature wise. Instead with the challenges of parking loading and heating this space I have to give this two thumbs down. Maybe the Murray Hotel would have been more promising, though we do not know.

"Great value and very clean."

8.0

I thought this place was an outstanding value (I went through Booking.com and got a room for $50.00 and when I went to their website it said it was all sold out and the prices were higher). It is a cool and funky slice of Western history. It was very clean and comfortable and although it doesn't have some amenities (like a coffee maker in the room) for the money you just can't beat it. And it's literally across the street from the Little Toad Creek Brewery and I had THE best grilled cheese sandwich ever! It was perfectly grilled with just the right amount of cheese, hatch green chilis, and high-quality bacon. Their side salad was also excellent. Amazing little western saloon The location is right on Main Street downtown where all the shops and restaurants are. There's a bit of traffic noise and the hotel is old, with creaky floors and thin walls (and a creaky bed so lovers beware!), so it might be a little noisy in the evenings. When I was there they had very few patrons, so it was tolerable (and I'm pretty sensitive to noise). Tip: Might want to bring good ear plugs if you really hate noise.

"Old school charm"

10.0

Our rooms were clean and comfortable. I've stayed here many times over the years, as I volunteer at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and I stay in town on occasion. A very central location within the Historic District. Not real fancy, but one can imagine historic figures of the Old South West strolling these halls. You must be able to climb stairs to the rooms on the second floor. We were on an outing to the City of Rocks park and an astronomy show and didn't want to drive the long hall on Hwy 15 back to the Monument after the event.

"Stay elsewhere"

2.0

The place is basically shut down. There is no one at the reception desk. Heat is a space heater in the room. The advertising says free breakfast. The first day there was coffee, some small packaged cake and small packages of cereal. The second day, there was no coffee. I told staff it would be nice to have coffee again. The next day, there was no coffee or breakfast material. Nothing. They could have easily put out an air pot or provided coffee cards to a nearby coffee shop. No housekeeping service for the 3 days we were there. It would have been nice to have the bed made and clean towels. No tolietries except a bar of soap and few plastic packets of shampoo that were almost impossible to open. The second day, there was water leaking from the ceiling in the reception area. Could not use any water or flush the toilet for about 8 hours. Lots of sawing noise. No offer of a discount or room upgrade despite many available (we may have been the only guests despite the sign on the door that the hotel was full). Absolutely no excuse for the poor service. Will not stay there again.

"A few things to consider"

6.0

Three stars is based on the fact this is a quaint hotel - I knew this going in and so anticipated some of the issues that happens when you stay in a 'quaint' hotel - small rooms and small bathrooms, thin walls, bad parking, etc. This hotel has a good location, but Silver City is not a big city nor is there tons to do - it is a nice place to walk a few blocks, eat food that is decent, shop (vintage bookstores and clothing makes up the bulk, with not great hours for the most part so don't count on a lot of shopping) and maybe - if you are a museum person - to see some history. I loved the historical references around the city and cozy. The best part is that it is a good place to land before exploring the Gilas - not a destination city on its own beyond what I already described. Ok - I know this is a review of the hotel, not the city, but I say that because you don't "really" have to stay on this street to enjoy that stuff - you can stay elsewhere and come to this particular street to do the above mentioned. CONS: My biggest gripe about the hotel is that when I'm on vacation, I hate to be bombarded with political stuff. This hotel has political signage up which - depending on your political leanings - could make you happy or unhappy. In my case, I was very unhappy and would not have stayed here or given my money to this establishment. So I am sharing a photo and you can decide for yourself if it makes a difference. My husbands biggest gripe was that he didn't fit on the toilet - he is tall and it was not a good seating arrangement for him lol. I shared a photo of that also. We aren't huge tv watchers but we were tired and thought we would watch - the TV had waves going thru it like old TVs used to have - it was a drag. Other Cons: street parking, continental breakfast was just a bore and not appealing, coffee was not great (if not spending money on the food, some better coffee would make your guests happy :)) and there are two tables in the seating area so I was lucky and not many guests in the morning while I was there but if it was busy Id imagine it would not be so easy to sit in there and eat. I thought the price was alright but there was another hotel rated high on TA that was a bit less with higher ratings that I wish we had stayed at instead - so I"d price check on this one. A guy on one of the forums really pushes this hotel so I was swayed, but you will have to accommodate some things for the charm. PROS: Staff was nice. Definitely historic and charming. Shower was hot. Right on main street. Loved bar across the street (Toad). Some people mentioned noise but the street noise wasn't bad when we were there - although we were not there on a weekend. Walls are thin, yes.

"Characterful hotel"

8.0

This is a quirky hotel/historical hotel with a lovely homely feel. Our room was spacious and we had a sitting room. It wasn't the best room configuration but we managed to make it work for us. The shower was good, the internet was fast and the breakfast was good. The staff were really friendly too. This is a good option if you want to stay in downtown Silver City!
