We liked the architectural uniqueness of the lodge’s exterior and enjoyed the walkway balcony with its small table and chairs outside our room. The location was excellent with Hayward and other attractions nearby. Very affordable stay too.

The rooms are quite small (although very clean and comfortable) so it would be nice to have a large commons area where guests could relax, possibly having board games, books and a pool table. I thought there was such a commons area, but couldn’t find it. The lower area of the lodge facing the road looked shabby with empty offices, perhaps this could be enhanced to make the lodge more eye appealing. The lodge manager at the Sawmill Saloon could offer a guest packet and be more on site at the lodge, or have a host there.
